Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Catcher in the Rye is considered by many to be one of "those" books that you "have" to read. Which is why I probabley always avoided it. I am glad that I have finally been forced to read this book.
Definatly not a book to be taken lightly, Catcher in the Rye is about a young teenager named Holden and the trials and tribulations about teenagehood and becoming an adult. Full of symbolims, this book is not one that can be read quickly (thus the length of time before I could write this review) and is definatly one that you will need to read more than once to catch all that Salinger is trying to tell you.
More than once I found myself thinking back on my own teenager years (not that long ago I admit) and identifying with Holden, and the things he goes through. I am not sure there would be a reader out there who will not identify with something of the charecture.
Defintaly a well written book, and one I would recommed to all.

Legna, way back when, wasn't this book viewed as risque? Bible thumpers compared it to pornography right? Did you see any reason for that in it?

Well, I'm guessing that scene in the hotel room between Holden and that prostitute was probably revolutionary in that time, and was viewed as risque, I'm guessing.

The entire book could be considerd to be "risky".
Themes that are addressed could be seen by church groups to be wrong and immoral, and yes the prostitue could be seen as pretty bad to those types of people.
You have to remember, that back when this book was written, "teenagers" didn't exist really. They were still children or adults, and there was not the support for the changes and challenges they go through as there is today.

But now you're gonna be suspected as a serial killer, y'know. They all read it before they went nuts. Or so says Mel in Conspiracy Theory, the most accurate movie ever made...

Wow. I've obviously been hanging out here too long.

I remember when we went over this in my 11th grade English class our teacher had the school psychologist cxome in to discuss all the possible mental problems Holden had. One of the biggest being the death of his brother. I totally saw that book in a different light from then on.
