Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice
In the world of reading, there are books that you can pick up, start to read but get easily distracted and put it down at any moment. This is not one of those books.
Mayfair Witches is a book that doesn't just grab you from the opening page, it renders you completly helpless and unable to function in normal society until you reach the last page. And even then you don't really want the book to be over. It's like an addiction. I mean it, don't read this book if you expect to eat, sleep, or use the bathroom.
Anne Rice has a history of writing "dark" books, as her Vampire series and several of her independant books such as "Ramses the Damned" or "Servant of the Bones" and the Mayfair Witches is no exception.
For those familiar with the Vampire series, you will have heard of the Talamsca- an agency that speciailizes in studying the occult. Studied through the ages, the Mayfair family stems from a harmless witch/midwife who stumbles upon an unknown force that is then passed from daughter to daughter down the lines to the present day. Rowan the most recent 'heiress' to the Mayfair "witch" title, was sent away as a child to her Aunt and Uncle in CA to protect her- but protect her from what?
A chance encounter between Rowan and Michael- a boating victim who survives and develops an unusual physcic ability- starts the book which will lead you among hundreds of twists and turns before dumping you out at a surprise ending.
Mayfair Witches is definatly Anne Rice's best work, and by far one of the best books I have ever read.
