Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel
Some of the most enjoyable books I have ever picked up are historical fiction. I have always loved history and the thought of learning history within a novel has always been enjoyable. Clan of the Cave Bear was no exception.
Set in prehstoric Eurasia, Clan of the Cave Bear is the story of a young girl named Ayla. At the age of 5 an earthquake shocks her world, and she is left alone, with little hope of survival. Her wanderings take her in the path of a cave lion (about 3x the size of today's lions) where she gets attacked, yet survives. Finally, a clan, also displaced by the earthquake, stumbles upon the little girl. And dispite their differences, takes her in. The clan, that comes upon Alya, is the Clan of the Cave Bear, or known to modern man as Neanderthals.
(History lesson: The so-called classic Neanderthals were robust and had a large, thick skull, a sloping forehead, a chinless jaw, and a brain somewhat larger than that of modern humans; they stood slightly over 5 ft From Histroy Channel.com)
Alya, a member of the Others (Note: I am not sure if this is Homo erectus or Cro-Magnon) is tall, blond with a flat forehead and chin, is an outcast to the Clan based upon her looks, but she is taken in, and finally, accepted by the group.
This story then follows her life with the Clan, and how, while trying her best to be a good clan woman, her differences stand out. As she breaks nearly all taboo's, her life will be yet again, changed forever.
Auel has put an incredible amount of research into her book. But not only is this book technically correct, it is also incredibly well written. You will turn each page, wanting to know what happens next. First in a series of 5 (the 5th book to be released in April) this is a book that all history buffs, and those who just want a good read, will enjoy.
