"Blood Price" by Tanya Huff
Blood Price, the name of the book doesn't bring up images of a book I would even think about reading. It was retreaved out of the Science Fiction section, a section I would never dream of walking into, by my shopping companion. Handed to me "You'll enjoy this". Looking at them crosseyed, pretty sure they were wrong, until after reading the blurb. Ok- so it looked intresting. I bought it.
Blood Price is the type of book that you don't read if you want to sleep. It begins simply, a woman happens to be present when she overhears a murder. An ex-homicide-cop, who quit because of failing eyesight, she quickly secures the scene and calls the police. After that, the book is no longer simple.
Hired by the girlfriend of the murded man, Vicki, PI and ex-cop, and coinisdentally the woman who walked in on the very murder hired to invistigate, find that the deaths could not possibly be being caused by a mortal. With newspapers screaming Vampire, and more bodies turning up, missing throats and drained of blood, Vicki is in a race against time to solve the murders.
What makes this book, more than a simple murder mystery (and also why I suspect it was in the sci-fi section), is that there is also something else searching for the killer. Henry Fitzroy, illegitimate son of Henry VIII- vampire.
Vicki and Henry get thrown together to battle a killer neither of them know anything about, and one the police don't believe in.
A book I didn't put down once after picking it up.
