Of Saints and Shadows by Christopher Golden
If you are not into horror stories, then a good vampire book is very hard to come by. With the exception of Anne Rice, there are very few authors who carry off a vampire novel without playing on the stero typical hollywood hype. Christopher Golden is not only an author that succeeds in beating the hype, in many ways he is a better author than Anne Rice. While I seem to be comparing the two authors, there is really nothing similar in their writing other than the subject matter.
Christopher Golden is most widley known for his co-authorship on many of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" book series. While I cannot tell you if these are any good- as I have not read them- I can tell you that "of Saints and Shadows" is as far from Buffy as you can imagine.
Saints and Shadows takes a different approach to vampires from any we have seen before. It is a battle between good and evil, and the lines have been drawn in ways we cannot expect. Led by a rouge vampire named Peter Octavian, the vampire covens of the world, discover that their weakness are only tied by the myths the church had established to keep them in control. If you believe it won't, then sunlight doesn't burn. The church, calling the vampires the "defiant ones" as they are the only creature of the spirit world that they cannot control, are set on destroying the vampire race once and for all.
The book leads you on a wild ride, never knowing how it is going to end. You keep second guessing your beliefs and thoughts, and everything else we have ever been told about vampires, and the church.
As of the moment I picked up this book, Christopher Golden is one of my favorite authors of all time. It will suck you in, chew you up, and spit you out at the end- wanting to do it all again.
