Cinema Blend
Actor of The Month
July 2004

Cinema Blend's Actor of the Month is bestowed to an actor or actress for their contribution to flicks these days. The actor/actress has been voted upon by the Cinema Blend staff (and forum members), and will be featured in the Ring of the site logo at some point during the month. That being Said, the “coveted” Cinema Blend Actor of the Month Award for July is Will Ferrell.

A graduate of the University of Southern California, Ferrell became interested in performing while a student at University High School in Irvine, California, where he made his school's daily morning announcements over the public address system in disguised voices. Will Ferrell started as a member of the Los Angeles comedy/improve group The Groundlings, where fellow cast members Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and former SNL repertory players such as Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman began their careers. It was there Will met Chris Kattan and the two became good friends and they would both go on to Saturday Night Live later. He has also appeared on several television programs, including "Strangers with Candy,” “Grace Under Fire” and “Living Single,” during his time at The Groundlings. Will also lent his voice to the arm- less and leg-less dad of cartoon family “The Oblongs.” In 1995 Will became a feature cast member at Saturday Night Live during the show's rapid recasting. He was declared quite possibly the worst cast member ever during his first season. However, his talents of impersonations and range of characters shot him forward to making him arguably the greatest SNL cast member ever. During his seven year run he is one of the few cast members to ever be nominated for an Emmy for a performance and played George W. Bush during the 2000 elections. He's appeared in every Saturday Night Live movie since his premiere on the show in 1995 (1998's A Night at the Roxbury, 1999's Superstar, 2000's The Ladies Man). In 2002 he left SNL and was the only cast member to ever receive a farewell from all the current cast members at the end of the season finale show. Since leaving the show Will has pursued a career in film. In 2000 he married and now lives in L.A.

Ironically enough, his big screen debut was as an Anchorman in the 1995 flop, Criminal Hearts.

Kind of pretty obvious Will would be actor of the month. Anyway, Will Ferrel is probably the funniest man alive right now. He's great. I hope to see Anchorman this weekend.

I think this thread did a LOT better in the CB main forum, for some reason.

Will is a genious. From SNL, to major motion pictures, he is hilarious.

I plan on seeing Anchorman, just don't know when.

Actually, there was a pretty big outcry amongst the mods and admins to make it Keira Knightly.

I'm surprised Bordick went with Will. :)

Favorite Will Ferrell film roles:

1. Frank the Tank (Old Schol)
2. Buddy Elf (Elf)
3. Ron Burgundy (Anchorman)
4. Mustafa (Austin Powers)
5. Mugatu (Zoolander)

Will Ferrell's lowpoint: Night at the Roxbury (a movie so bad I actually walked out)

What happened was there was a tie in the admin & mod vote. So I opened it up the voting to the forum members....there in where Will one.

Will Ferrell's lowpoint: Night at the Roxbury (a movie so bad I actually walked out) Yup. It makes one wonder why anyone would imagine that something that's successful as a two minute comedy sketch would be a good concept for a two hour movie. :p

Somehow I never really appreciated Will on SNL but Elf and Zoolander were great fun to watch him in.

I liked him on SNL... some of the time. I thought his Bush was hilarious, as were some of his other characters... but I always hated that stupid cheerleader sketch he did with the untalented Cheri Oteri.

You mean the ones that were funny for the first two seconds and then you switched channels, came back five minutes later, and it was still on and you didn't know why? :lol

His SNL characters were always so lame. His impressions were pretty good. It's just a good thing he got out of sketch comedy. I think he does better with a solid director to channel his gifts.

Oh I don't know... I watched "The Best of Will Ferrell 2" on SNL last weekend and it was pretty damn hilarious.

Ferrell never stood out on SNL until AFTER the Bush/Gore thing. He was very consistant with what he did, but after the whole 2000 election thing he blew up.

Yup...he's mainly funny because he knows how not to step on the others' toes and therefore gets laughs off them...except with Cheri Oteri...'cuz she just wasn't funny.

P.S. I like the new logo header for the Celebrity Stink forum...whoever's responsible...smeagol?

nope, i did this one.. I'll take it as a compliment if you thought Smeags did it. He's much more adept at Photoshop than me.

Kudos to you, then, man. Nice font choice!
