In particular, many Christians – Catholic or not – have been incensed by the movie’s poster, which features a symbol made from the combination of a swastika and a cross.
The film describes how, after the mysterious death of the vocally anti-fascist Pius XI, the first diplomat granted a papal audience was the ambassador of the Reich. The new pope was Pius XII. He congratulated the fascist Franco on his “Catholic victory,” in Spain, and refused to condemn the massacre of more than 600,000 Serbs, gypsies and Jews, at the hand of the Croatian Catholic president Ante Pavelic. When the British ambassador presented the pope with extensive evidence of deportation and execution of Jews, the Vatican replied that the Pope does not take sides.
However, the center of the story is another real life character, Kurt Gerstein, who joined the Waffen SS and became the “Head of Hygiene,” responsible for Zyklon B production. His Christian convictions overrode his loyalty to the Nazi cause, and he alerted his church, Swiss and Dutch diplomats, and eventually, the Pope. He was met with silence. During his imprisonment after the war, Gerstein hung himself -- but not until he had written about what he had witnessed. “The Gerstein Report” was used against the Nazi during the Nurenberg tribunal.
