Columbia Pictures has completed a deal to get Sam Raimi to direct Spiderman 2, with production beginning in early 2003.
In other news, they have hired "Smallville" executive producers Miles MIllar and Alfred Gough to write the script.
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst were contractually obligated to film a sequel, but Director Raimi was not.

Black Cat might make an appearance in Spider-man 2 as a potential love interest for Peter Parker.
Here's a quote from the lovely Kirsten Dunst about Spider-man 2:
"There will always be that dynamic between Peter and her with the love story, you know, keeping them apart. They're going to bring in another girl [for the sequel]...they might bring in Black Cat ...I don't know for sure. I think I'll have a new boyfriend and Tob will have a girlfriend; it will be awkward and weird. She's more of a woman and he's more of a man. It'll be interesting to see Spider-Man grown up as an adult in the next film and third one if we get there."

With all these rumours about who WILL be in the sequel, Mr Raimi made it very clear who WON'T be making an appearance in the sequel any time soon:
"I think I've got to read more of the comics because I can never quite figure out why Venom hates Peter so much." says Sam. "Do you hate people in your life? It's hard to hate. And then why does he hate him so much? It's hard to really believe in it. I guess I need to read more Venom comics because the few that I've read, I get that he hates him - and boy does he - but I don't understand why. I need to learn more about him. I think everyone has a better understanding of Venom than I do. All I'll say is Venom wouldn't be the first villain I'd like to see because I don't know him that well."

David Koepp, the screenwriter "for Spider-Man", apparently has had a change of heart. He has came up with an idea for "Spider-Man 2". This comes after Koepp previously stating that he would not be a part of the sequel.
Even before a word of "Spider-Man 2" has been committed to paper, the list of scribes has lengthened, and a there's web of intrigue surrounding them.
Previously, it was announced that Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the duo that brought us "Shanghai Noon" and "Smallville," would pen the sequel. Apparently, they are still on board will revise the Koepp rough draft of his new idea.
My take
-------
I smell something here... This story might be be exactly right. But the cynic in me thinks that the duo of Gough and Miles might be "pursuing other interests" very soon. Seems to me that Koepp's price was finally met.
