Ever read a book where the cover art just didn't match the details in the book? Or on the otherhand, maybe it was the perfect depiction. What are some books that have really good or horribly bad cover art? any artists in particular spring to mind?

Brian Froud, the illustrator for movies such as the Dark Crystal, recently released a book on faeries, both good and bad, that I thought Matt might be interested in :p. The art on the cover and in the book itself is quite something.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin has some nice cover art. It gives a nice depiction of the Character John Snow. The only thing is that no where in the stroy is there a place where the scene takes place. (It's hard to tell in the pic, but the sword is the key to why the scene couldn't have happened.) It's a good picture regardless. :)

One thing that has bothered me about cover art is when the book is turned into a movie, the book is re-released with a scene from the movie or promotional photo on the cover. Anybody have any opinions on this?

yes i have an opinion on this. it sucks :p. or at the very least it's silly. i mean, i understand the marketing value of it, but personally i prefer to see some good original artwork on covers rather than a picture of some actor or actress. i think it gives a book more character.

Crichton and Grisham books and the LOTR books specifically come to mind.

Yeah, as soon as Hannibal was announced as a movie, the publisher pulled the cool looking cover which would've matched my Silence & Red Dragon copies and replaced it with a picture of freakin' Anthony Hopkins. Could I get the other one? No!
