Alabama sucks

It really does. Not only did we throw a belt in Alabama on the way to Denver, but now the water pump has gone out. We are 20 miles inside the Alabama border from Mississippi and the water pump goes at a gas station. Chris was able to get another one ordered, but they'll have to deliver it in the morning. So I'm stuck in Alabama, I was supposed to be home tonight, I was supposed to be at work tomorrow (had to take another vacation day), I really miss my bed and I really miss my dogs.

I think I hear banjos.....

Well, we just finished eating in Truck Stop Hell: Where Truckers Go to Die. I feel like crap. Even the fruit was bad for you. I bought a twelve pack of beer and we're going to drink to our bad health.

I could get enough material to write a Jack Kerouac-esk book from this trip. Except I'd do it regarding the slums of America.

Here's what I've learned on this trip so far:

This country stinks. Seriously, from the Mississippi River on it smells like cow / horse shit.

Arkansas is the worst state in the union. This state is the one that spawned all of the mutant mosquito movies.

Texas is huge, but it has the best steaks ever. Josh, if you haven't eaten at the Saltgrass Steakhouse (or anyone else who has one) I highly recommend it.

Oh, and Denver is now home-sweet-home. We absolutely fell in love with the place. The weather was perfect -- 90 degrees and low humidity. The people at the show were complaining at how hot it was; Chris and I scoffed. Hot? They don't know the meaning of the word hot. So we are going to start researching the area and look for a place to live. Plus it's supposed to be the next hot spot for real estate development, which is what Chris wants to get into, so that'll be perfect. The only bad things about the place we've been able to find so far is it seems to be a Pepsi town (I'm a die-hard Coke fan) and they don't have sweet tea.

They've got Saltgrass Steakhouses on every corner round here, they're a chain. But yeah, they're pretty good. :)

Best steak though is in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

If you move to Denver though, I am so visiting. I'd love to move there. Tried to, just couldn't get the job I applied for.

I can understand you not thinking much of Alabama when you have car problems. I have come to love my adopted state.

I live in a very small town with excellent schools and I am walking distance from a beautiful park. I actually know my neighbors and when my son gets old enough I won't have any qualms about him going outside to play without adult supervision. I have gone to little league games in the park and watched the parents do nothing but encourage their little guys. No one yells at the umpires because everybody knows each other.

When I drive to work there's a good chance I'll see a hawk lurking on a powerline, scoping out a cotton or bean field looking for his breakfast. The entire 35 minute commute to Huntsville is on highway and the scenery is nothing but fields, trees, and hills. When the traffic is bad I might actually have to slow down to 60 miles an hour. I have had two breakdowns since moving here in 1998 and both times someone pulled over to help me within minutes of stopping.

I'm not saying Alabama is perfect; far from it, but few people outside of this state really know anything about it.

We'll have to remember Forth Worth Stockyards when we go back. And we were on a time crunch, otherwise I probably would have looked you up! :)

The main problem with moving to Denver would be if Chris were able to find a job there. The place where we were looking (Morrison) is about 80 miles to the Denver Tech area, and we're used to driving an hour and a half to work each way, so it wouldn't be a big deal. I'm crossing my fingers that we'll be able to find something.

Once we do move, anyone in the area is welcome to visit.

And Sandy, no offense to those who live there and enjoy it. I'm sure that your part of Alabama is lovely. I was in a car with no a/c, dealing with the humidity and saw nothing more than backwoods Alabama. It was terrible everywhere we stopped.

I didn't see a jacuzzi; they had a pool but it was locked up.

And the room had both a minifridge / freezer combo AND a microwave!
