According to a British poll conducted for World Book Day, teenaged girls spend more than twice as much of their time reading for pleasure as boys do—4.5 hours a week compared with 2.3 hours for boys. Instead of reading, boys spend an average of 11 hours a week watching television and nine hours playing video games. The discrepancy in reading habits can be seen academically, with girls scoring higher in both primary and secondary schools.

who woulda thunk it? ;)

I'm not surprised really.

We raise our boys to be big dumb sports stars. They never have a chance, to busy playing football or some other mentally useless excercise.

Girls at least have a chance.

That is actually true with my friends. They are all roughly between 26 and 44 and it's mostly the women that read a lot. How odd.

Hmm yes we really need to make Brynn a new sig. lol!

Guys who read in school are "geeks" and recieve many wedgies. Reading is discouraged. I still have my underwear wedged up my crack.

My impression that learning is not as culturally undesirable among young girls.

I was given a wedgie once and only once in school in the 4th grade. The bully decided he didnt like a quart of elmers art glue on his head and and the rest of his body.Though the rest of the class was amused.
I liked to read hardbound books at school incase anyone ever said anything I would just crack'em with it.
Though I played alot of sports in highschool I still loved to read.
I used to get grounded ALOT at least 5 -6 months out of the year but books were always there to keep me entertained.

Books are my Frnds

I used to row for 2hrs every day after school, abd still had plenty of time to read, play on my computer and watch TV.

How?

I donno! These days I go to work, sleep, do (some) of the housework and watch Buffy on a Thursday night!

Have you ever noticed how bad at spelling most heavy readers are? I point to myself as a prime example, but its shows with Hobbit alot, and Cogs sometimes.

Well in my case it is simply carelessness.

I just type the way I think, which means I don't stop to think about spelling as I go. Perhaps that IS a side effect of reading so much, when you really ENJOY reading and get into what you're reading, you don't sit there nitpicking the spelling as long as you can understand the meaning.

Intersting thought Devils!

pronunciation is another thing some readers (me) commonly have problems with. i'll see a word so often and have it set in my head that it's said one way, and later find out that in reality it's said another way.

on the positive side of things, readers tend to have a wider vocabulary, even if they can't speak or spell rite.
