I'm down I'll definitely go never mind the fact that I've seen the film a hundred times and that their will probably not be any new footage that wasn't already on the DVD deleted scenes.
But sure Its good.
Ehem. If you read what I wrote I said there will be footage not even on the DVD. Well maybe.
I love this movie so much though, I actually cringe at the thought of more footage being added or even the music changing. It is PERFECT the way it is. No touchy!!!
For instance, those deleted scenes on the DVD... most of those NEEDED to be cut and the movie is better off without them.

I have to say the extra scenes with Gretchen did change their relationship from "two misfits who found eachother" to "My Mom just died lets get our **** on".
And the Watership Down scenes are SO bad that they actually felt to me like a parody of Donnie Darko.
But some of them where quite good, like the exchange between Donnie and his father which added a shitload of depth to their relationship.

I only recently became a fan of this movie a while after it came out on DVD, so I would love to see it in theaters.

Same here, Masterthes. My husband had it on his computer, we were bored one night and decided to watch it, and immediately were huge fans. I will definitely make sure to check this out in theaters!

Uhhmmm, I don't agree with this. I'd rather see a special edition DVD. And taking out the soundtrack? Noo, it had a killer soundtrack. He better leave in Echo & the Bunnymen, because if he doesn't, I will not see it.
Okay, not really, but I love Echo & the Bunnymen.
Well, I'm DELIGHTED for it to be back in theaters, I think that is wonderful and I'd rather have that than some stupid double dipping DVD release, but I do agree with you NotSo that it is not a good idea to take out the music, which is WONDERFUL, nor is it a good idea to insert deleted scenes.

You wouldn't rather see a nice, new special edition DVD? Think about it, you pay about half the cost of the DVD to see it once in theatres. You can pay 20 bucks and be able to watch it as often as possible.
I'm willing to bet they'll actually do both. More money.
Bom bom bommm, greedy dot com.
No. Seeing it in a theater is the best way to see any movie. I already have the DVD. I hate DVD double dipping, it sucks.
A re-release in theaters is alwasy better than a SECOND DVD release. Double DVD releases ALWAYS suck, just on general principle.
Maybe a Criterion DVD 5-10 years from now. For now, get it back in theaters, get the word out on it, get more people interested. Another DVD release isn't going to do a damn thing to get new people to see the movie.

I think the DVD as is, is a great release, if it were barebones I'd see Notso's point, but its got an hour of deleted scenes, THE book, one of the greatest commentaries ever and oodles of other stuff.
Exactly. What more do you really need?

Exactly, I'd love to see it in the theater, but I wouldn't go out and double dip for just another DVD release. The release they already put out is great, like EDJ said. But it really ****ing sucks that Kelly is thinking of taking out the music!!BOOOOO!! The music was one of the best parts of the film in my opinion.
Yes, but it is "cool" to hate pop music, and technically the movie has pop music, so of course as a SERIOUS "artist" he has to say that he was forced to use it and wants to take it out or something.
That's the only explanation I can come up with.
But it is a movie about th 80's and the music is pitch perfect for it and that decade... even the new music.

Exactly, the music fits PERFECTLY. Oh well, shit happens. At least we still have the DVD WITH the music.
I don't think it is for CERTAIN that the music is out though.
Yeah, I doubt they will take it all out even so.

Hmmm... I read that there will be more pop music - music he couldn't get the rights to for the initial release so he had to use orchestrations at points he had intended for pop music.

From AICN:
As he got up to leave, the SDFCS representative reminded him of his special announcement: he is in negotiations with Newmarket Film Group to re-release Donnie Darko next March, including more pop music removed since it was shown at Sundance, and, more importantly - it will be a Directorís Cut. He claimed it may include stuff not available on the DVD. He did not specify how wide it will be distributed.
Harry says:
I'm very much to seeing DONNIE DARKO with it's original music from the SUNDANCE time period in...
I interpret this as: It will include more pop music, the way the movie had been presented at Sundance but had subsequently been cut after the Sundance showing.
