Well not dead, but Hollywood's found a newer concept to rip off (http://www.filmhobbit.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5381)
Why is that a bad thing though? I mean if you are going to make a sequel anyway, might as well do them all at once. That way you are guarenteed the same cast!

Seriously I seem to be the only one enjoying this glut of trilogies.

Superman did it first in the late 70's they shot half of Superman II with the first. Then Back to the Future did it 12 year later. Ten Years after that LOTR then Matrix did it. Kill Bill just split in half, much like the way Superman and Superman II did(only they thought of split before it was finished, then weant back and tweaked some of the stuff). LOTR & Matrix were "shot as one big movie" all at once. BTTF weant back to back, literally. Shot II, then shot III. This all at once crap is a big gamble. I could see why LOTR & Matrix did it. It was cost effective. But it's still a gamble. If the suits decided to go ahead and make 2 sequels at once.....what if the second one, the the third is hung out to dry. It depends on what they do. The 2 for 1 dealcan only be used for franchises that people have enough interest in.LOTR has been around for like 60 years, that already had a known following. And after the little 2 for 1 deal it's usually over. 2 for 1 means no more afterwards, that's good at least.

Yeah, that's kinda my point.
90% of the back-to-back filming you'll see cropping up will be completely unneccessary and be for projects that have no guaranteed success for either of the two being filmed.
It is a huge gamble to be taking for the sake of jumping on a bandwagon.
Um, scuse me but Matrix did NOT do the same thing as LOTR. Matrix did the same thing as BTTF... made the first movie and then went and filmed the next two back to back.
To my knowledge, LOTR remains the only film series ever to film ALL THREE parts of a complete trilogy as one movie.

The first Matrix was shot seperately like BTTF. But Reloaded & Revolutions were shot simultaneously, not Back to back like BTTF 2 & 3

We're all getting very picky now aren't we. Yeah the Matrix was one story told over two movies shot simultaneously, BTTF was two seperate stories shot back-to-back.

That's why said but worded differently and a little jumbled. Thanks tay.
Anyway... point being that no one has done what Lord of the Rings has done. And in the future it doesn't look likely to be repeated. At best you'll get two parts shot at once.
Lord of the Rings was one complete vision made in one complete setting. Genius... and riskier than anything else we're talking about.
Kill Bill I don't think counts in this scenario either, because it wasn't originally filmed to be two movies, the intention was that they were making one movie... Tarantino's ego just ran wild and it got to be too long.

Actually, the first film to do this was The Three Musketeers/The Four Musketeers.
They were shot so back-to-back that the cast wasn't even aware two films were being made, and ended up sueing for a cut of the profits on the second movie.

Kill Bill didn't though, since day dot they were saying how Kill Bill was going to be a single movie which would run circa three hours...
Then presto, two weeks after Reloaded made a shit load of money Harvey "Dolla' bill y'all" Weinstein went to QT with the idea of splitting it...
