FOX is playing with time again, and not just on screen.
The network that broadcasts "24" has given a pilot order to a cop drama called "Ricochet" from Touchstone TV and writer Rene Echevarria. The show will flip the usual police-procedural format by showing the end of a case first, then working backward to show events leading up to it.
The pilot order comes earlier than usual for such a deal, keeping with FOX's goal of launching series year-round instead of just during the traditional fall and midseason crush.
"FOX was very aggressive about telling us that they wanted to get scripts early because they wanted to pick some things up early," Touchstone TV president Stephen McPherson tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I give FOX a lot of credit for going ahead and pulling the trigger on an innovative idea."
Echevarria ("Dark Angel," "Star Trek: The Next Generation") wrote the pilot and will serve as an executive producer with Jeff Kline ("That Was Then").
The early order could give "Ricochet" an advantage in casting and hiring crew. It has about a six-week head start before the usual frenzy of pilot orders in January.
