Yeah they are different films but that doesn't change the fact that Die Hard revolutionized the action film, while Gladiator succeeded only in being really really cool.

indeed
John McTiernan...Ridley Scott
Bruce Willis...Russel Crowe
Die Hard is an action classic.
Gladiator is an epic drama with action to help it out.
Both are excellent films, but I vote Die Hard for it is genre defining classic.

This is a no-contest, and I'm glad to see the voters agree. Gladiator is an awesome film, and one of the best of 2000, but has nothing on Die Hard. Even in terms of which is the better film, Die Hard has a better story and one of the greatest heroes in action movie history. No offense to Gladiator, though.

I would have figured there would be a little competition, but I guess Die Hard can certainly stand the test of time.

I voted for it, even though I'd class it more as "historical epic" or somesuch rather than "action movie".
Joaquin Phoenix more than made up for any of the movie's shortcomings for me. (I liked 8mm too, so maybe I'm just weird.)
I think I've been overexposed to Die Hard to now appreciate how good it may be. I react to it the same way I do Lethal Weapon. They were fine for the first dozen viewings, but after that... And enough with the sequels, already!
