It does. 9 p.m. tonight. Anyone who watched the original series and is checking this out be sure to fill me in.

Fat Harry's review made it sound terrible.
I've read others that say it is great though, as long as you don't get caught up in the original.
it's being replayed at 11:09 tonight and I think much later around 1: or so if you wanna tape it.

Don't listen to Fat harry.
watch it.

The new starbuck could so kick the old starbucks girly ass.
I watched it, well most of it.
It isn't terrible, though the first half of it was horribly boring and I nearly shut it off.
But then the Cylons started killing everyone and it actually got kinda interesting.
And I dig the ships and the way they do outerspace. Looks like models being dragged around the screen! I love it.
The new Starbuck... did they ever actually call her Starbuck??? I hate that they hardly ever call the characters by their callsigns. Very annoying.
Did anyone notice that Jolly was in the group of fighters that were slaughtered in the first wave? Poor Jolly.
But I am confused about this storyline.
Someone explain to me what is going on. Here is my best guess, tell me if I'm right or not.
There are these 12 colonies. The Battlestar Galactica is just one of many battlestars in their fleet, and one of the oldest. It is about to be retired and turned into a museum.
The humans have fought the Cyclons in the past, and apparently won. They even have a museum in a Cyclon base star, complete with the clunky old cyclons from the old show on display.
But the Cylons are still lurking out there someone, and devise a plan to wipe out the colonies, and thus attack.
Is this correct?

You are correct. Also there were 12 battlestars (one for each colony)
I really really REALLY enjoyed this show. I forgot how into this series I was back in the day.
I am SO happy with this show!
I thought the character relationships were a bit contrived and forced, but once the battle started that straightened things out.
Val, I heard them say that 30 Battlestars had been destroyed.

Yes, 30 battlestars had been destroyed.
I really think I could have liked it more if it wasn't called "Battlestar Galactica". It would have been much more interesting as an original story, I think.
And the first hour was absolutely horrible. Amazing how Hobbit and I think so much alike on so many levels.
I'm very happy with the revamp.
I kinda dig the new Cylon ships. cool!
I'll have to catch episode 2 later to see if I still agree.
Now was Apollo always Adama's son? I don't remember from the original show. I like though they had the girl Starbuck smoking a short stogey in honor of the old Starbuck!

New show is much better than the original. Had a nice epic feel to it, plus a level of realism that just clicks. Actors and actresses filled into their roles nicely, after a few bumps in the road. The script just got better and better. And the CGI effects kicked ass, especially that huge firefight towards the end of Part 2.
Me want to see them spin this off into a new series!

Saw most of Part 2 last night. Mini series seems to get better as it goes. VERY COOL.
How many episodes of this mini-series are there?
Anyway... yeah, I LOVE the effects too Faf. Very... raw looking? I love that. It doesn't look OVER GLOSSED like the stuff in the new Star Wars movies.
I also love how they keep pulling back for the EXTREME WIDE SHOTS. For once a sci-fi show that actually "gets" how BIG the distances are in space.
Smart smart work on the effects. Very smart.
Oh and yes, Apollo was always Adama's son. However, Apollo's brother did not always sleep with Starbuck. :lol
i think that was it. But I assume they have already filmed more episodes in preparation for the tv show run.

Looking at the serious lack of big name actors barring one, and hes not the biggest name around, they wouldnt have a problem keeping that cast intact if they want to do this...
and i really hope they do.

Two episodes in this miniseries, so far. There probably will be more to come. I don't care if they do this in multiple miniseries offerings, or a tv series. JUST GIVE ME MORE!!!!

Spot on, Hobs, spot on. The only problem I have is that after all these years.....the Vipers just don't cut it anymore. After watching the Jedi Starfighter, the EarthForce Starfuries, anything in Weber's Honor Harrington, TIE Fighter, Homeworld, etc...the Vipers just look like ass. But the feel of the effects is definitely nice.

I loved how they kept showing us extreme wide shots for missile barrages, how many there really were, and the distances involved. We've seen the "Michael Bay just wanted to do a CGI camerashot of the bomb falling into the USS Arizona" one too many times.
Only I just wish that the Galactica could have had some support vessels (in anything I would write...they would. And fleet actions are rather gigantic. It would make Wolf 359 look like child's play).

Faf, don't let EDJ know you just made a Star Trek reference that he can't possibly understand. He'll swoop in with Rob Zombie and kick your ass. ;)
But yeah I have a serious thing for large scale, space fleet engagements. I love it.
Faf, have you ever played the game Homeworld for PC?

Damnit, I'm a geek, entitled to my freedom to geek speech rights! :lol
And the only thing is, Rob Zombie would probably end up hanging out with me in my room, watching anime and wrestling.

I got Homeworld 2 for free at work. But ask me that question again when the college semester ends!

God Hobbits Been Hostile Lately.
Don't insult Star Trek when he's around, I got a feeling his wallpaper is just a big heart with and arrow through it with J.T. + RM 4eva

I've got Homeworld. I've not played it for a while but I keep getting my ass handed to me by the psychotic cult shortly after meeting the Benthusi (sp?)
Faf, I have Homeworld and Homeworld 2, and like Homeworld better but both are great and pretty similar.
But play it. It can be REALLY hard but it is the most incredible tactical space game I have ever played. It is totally 3d so you can use x,y,z planes to control your fleet. And your fleet can get MASSIVE with hundreds of ships of all different types.
And you can't just build one type of ship and win. You need fighters (tons of different types) and carriers to support them. You need capital ships of different types... some to take on other capital ships, others to defend sgainst fast fighter squadrons. You need Corvette's to give a little umpf for fighter backup, You have support ships, mining ships, cloaking ships, probes, scouts, shield generating ships, etc.
Just a brilliant tactical game that really gets space combat RIGHT.
Anyway, the fleet combat in Battlestar Galactica really reminded me of that... only what we saw was on a bit smaller scale than some of my Homeworld battles. Actually, the premise of Battlestar Galactica is actually pretty similar to the game. I suspect Homeworld got a few ideas from it.
Tay... Homeworld can be really hard. You should have told me... we should play :)

Don't usually like real-time strategy games but got quite into homeworld. it's got a real sense of space being hooooooge that games like Tie Fighter n stuff never really conveys.
And the music kicks ass.
The music does kick ass.
Matt, it is exactly like being in the middle of the huge fleet battle at the end of Return of the Jedi, only you command the entire fleet and can zoom in and out of any portion of it at any time.
Pick it up! Homeworld 2 is out now, so you can usually pick up the original in the bargain bin for like 10 bucks. Well worth it. It was game of the year 1999.

my favorite was captureing almost 100 frigates on the run where the bad guys are in a huge globe.
you run a scout in, as 5-6 frigates chase it out you salvage them.
For about 2 hours.
By the time you in the finals i had 80 ion frigates + all my normal cap ships maxed...
lol! Good job Val.
I had a hard time getting that to work on that mission when I did it. I was able to capture 10 or so, just enough to make a hole in their globe so I could sneak my fleet through, but I found that every time I'd lure them out, they'd start to turn back before my fleet got there to cap them, or when I'd attack them then more ships would come out of the globe and crush my forces.
Tay, Val... Homeworld... we should play.

ya, will have to set something up.
only just discovered... I don't have the WON patch installed and it's no longer on won.net
Valkary

You run in a single scout. don't shoot. then run the scout BEHIND your fleet. send in pairs of salvage boats. the ion frigates won't shoot at the salvage boats until they kill the scout. Just keep the scout away from the frigates.
rinse repeat.
Salvage ALL the ion frigates.
Then run the frigate all in a sphere formation. I call it the death star. when 50 frigates ALL shoot the same cap ship it goes up in a single salvo.
You have it on PC hobbes? wookie bought it and we both run it from the same disk. do we need to have another disk for multi-play?
crappertay
12-12-2003, 03:59 AM
My version was a total install. So I don't see there being a problem if yours is the same.
No problem for you Tay, but I think Val is asking if he and Wookie can both play at his house online using different machines but just one disc copy of the game.
I'm not sure... but I want to say that you can't do that, that you MUST have the disc in your CD-ROM to play....
That is the sucky thing. I have a LAN set up now, but I only have one copy of each game so I can never play on my LAN when people come over. How do people do that??? Do they buy two copies of every game??
Valkary
12-12-2003, 01:08 PM
yup. looks like it won'nt let me in unless i reinstall and use the disk. right now i have the noCD crack installed and it won't let me into multi-player.
which is really no big deal.
set up a time (but not till after next tuesday). i have finals mon and tues.
Hey Val, where does one go to look for no-cd cracks? I'd like one for a couple games so I can play them at home on my LAN. Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds for instance.

They even have a museum in a Cyclon base star, complete with the clunky old cyclons from the old show on display.
The Cylon war was 40 years ago, Galactica was one of 12 original Battlestars built using older technology to combat the Cylons, who were using the human dependence on technology against them, breaking into the systems in much the same way they did for this attack. That first War ended with no true victor, a cease fire was signed, and then the Cylons disappeared for the 40 intervening years. No doubt the initial Battlestar fleet increased in size throughout the first Cylon War, and continued to grow afterwards, thus the figure of 30 Battlestars destroyed in the opening waves.
The museum you speak of is actually in the starboard hangar bay of Galactica(which renders said hangar initially unuseable), and did include a model of an original Cylon and Cylon Basestar.
--End of Uber-Geekness--
I really enjoyed this, for many of the same reasons the rest of you did. The space battles were awesome, although I didn't like the new look of the Cylon fighters. The Basestars were cool, and the redesigned Galactica was very cool. I was EXTREMELY upset when I realized there were only two episodes in this little miniseries, and I want MORE. Yeah, I've seen almost every episode of the original, I know how the basic story ends, but the new charachter twists and additions make me want MORE! Well...that and the chance of another Starbuck nippular moment...hotness...very hotness....

I finally watched the second half tonight.
As much as the first half did not thrill me, the second half blew me a-freaking-way. GREAT. I was on the edge of the couch during the space battle when Starbuck brings Apollo's viper into the hanger by just a millimeter and then they all jump to FTL. WOW.
And then Adama using the legend of Earth to keep his people's spirits up...
I have to admit wanting to see a new series based on this imagery.

Okies, the only part I've seen is where they make the initial run, and Amadala gives his speach about Earth. Was there more to the series, and I missed it?
I agree that what I saw was awesome effects works. The Large battle where they ran out of the storm, the dogfights - note the lack of most sound, as it should be in space. The designs, the ideas of pilotless Cylon Fighters...everything was just kewl.
Now, on the tangent that's formed..
Pick it up! Homeworld 2 is out now, so you can usually pick up the original in the bargain bin for like 10 bucks. Well worth it. It was game of the year 1999.
I can already see more of my gaming time slipping into another direction. Damnit.
Please excuse me for bumping AND bringing it back on topic. Anyone know when/if they are airing the 2 parts again.
I can't believe I missed first time round but I do seem to get to see less sci-fi channel since getting married LOL. Least her indoors bought me the BG original movie )which makes up for missing this a little) :D

Haven't heard Thio. If they really are making a full series out of it, they may hold them now until the series debut.
But otherwise, it's sci-fi, they tend to run things like that Sunday night.

If the schedule is correct on their web page, then they're not showing it again anytime soon. The ONLY showings of the mini series appeared to have been in December.
