so now that Majenta and Wookie is getting into this filmhobbit thing, we just noticed something.
Even though we are each logged into different profiles, if one of us marks a section or thread as read it marks it for all of us.
does vb bulletin keep track of you by IP address or something? I know we share one IP address for all the computers in the house. That would explain it.
Any chance we can link stuf to the mac address instead?
If not, not a biggy.
So are you Majenta and Wookie related? or just friends?
hmm.. it does keep up with ip addresses but I had no idea that it would do THAT. So I'm assuming you are saying ya'll all use the same computer?
I do have certain issues with the VBulletin cookies. OHHH COGITO! This sounds like something you might be better equipped at fixing.
I would guess the problem is this:
VBulletin uses cookies to mark forums read. So it throws a cookie on your computer to say all forums are read, and then someone else logs in and it picks up the same cookie and displays all forums as read.
This is what I suspect anyway.
If I get a chance I'll test it with the MangoFett and CrashTestHobbit profiles.

nope, i have a home network, currently with three computers using a single DSL line. The router sets up a network addressing table to keep all the machines straight but we only have one IP address.
for the record, Majenta is my significant other and Wookie is her son who lives with us.
Hmm. that is pretty strange Val. I have a similar set up at home and haven't noticed this.
I will attempt to test that then Log on to both of my computers in my LAN and test back and forth.
But I've never noticed this as a problem myself.
It might depend somewhat on your ISP actually now that I think of it. Hmm.

well also I notice that if i sign in from school, it remebers which threads i have or have not read. Therefore it's storing this information on the server somwhere, not in cookies on my local machine.
Not sure if that helps, but it's extra info.
Do you have cable or DSL?
cable.
I know cookies are involved somehow with how it stores info, because we had to do a lot of adjusting of cookie settings when we set this thing up in order to get the mark forum thing to work at all.
I'd be surprised if it uses IP though.

well it may be using cookies, but somehow if i sign onto a machine across town it knows what posts I have or have not read. So it's got to be more complicated than just cookies on the client.
If it turns out there is nothing to be done it's no biggy. we just need to pay attention to what we have and haven't read.
FWIW it doesn't seem to be all the time. just sometimes that it happens.
Honestly the mark post feature isn't ideal anyway.
If I pay to upgrade to the new version I hear it works better.
