Nope, not the real deal but it looks cool though. To my knowledge Northern Exposure hasn't been officially released in the US yet.
There's a street date for Australia (region code 4) though - 02/25/04 - "NORTHERN EXPOSURE: Best Of Series 1 DVD" from Universal. Number of discs: 1 / Running time: 360 min.

Hmmmm, don't know about the f#ck Australia post?! Not sure if I understand the logic (if any) behind that comment however yes, Region 4 release is in Feb and no it's not The Best Of, it is Season 1 (2 discs) so if you have a multi-region player, then order away!

Here's a link for a Region 4 site that ships overseas:

hi Lisa! and welcome to cinemablend! ignore Wiggum on this. we love aussies :). just ask Legna.

now, how did i miss this thread? musta been while i was on holiday vacation. anywho, that ebay item looks like a rip of the R2 version. same cover and details. can't believe it sold for ninety bucks. it's a really bare-bones dvd, and the picture quality could be better.

but glad to hear it's coming to Australia! and Ezydvd is a great recommendation. i've shopped with them before and been very pleased.

Hi Artic,

Thanks for the post. We're all Home Cinema/Movie lovers wherever we live and personally, I have no alliance at all when it comes to Region coding and where I order my movies from. Hell, at least a 1/3 of my movies have come from Region 1. I've also ordered from Japan and England too, wherever they have what I'm after.

Can't wait for Northern Exposure though and hasn't it been a long wait?? What about American Gothic? Anyone heard anything on that?

So, anyone watched the Golden Globes? Sooooo many good movies to come to DVD eventually. Mystic River, House of Sand and Fog, Big Fish, Angels In America, Kill Bill 2 and of course LOR Return Of The King. Think I'll have to get a 2nd job to fund this....

DVD Exposure *Updated*
Posted by David Lambert
2/17/2004

Fans have been eagerly awaiting this news since the July '03 report from USA Today that it was in-the-works. Today, TVShowsOnDVD is pleased to tell you that Northern Exposure - The Complete 1st Season will arrive on DVD this May 25th.

The series premiered with a short 8-episode run in the Summer of 1990, an hour long "dramedy" about a Jewish doctor (played by Rob Morrow) who's deal to get paid up for medical school meant he had to go where he was assigned...in Alaska, since the state was the source of the money. Dr. Joel Fleischman is assigned in the end to Cicely, Alaska, a town full of strange but lovable characters including former astronaut Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin), a radio D.J. ("Chris in the Morning", played by John Corbett) with a strange outlook on life, Ed Chigliak (Darren Burrows )...and Maggie O'Connell, of course, played by co-star Janine Turner.

Universal Home Video announced the DVD release of the debut season this morning, on a 2-disc (double-sided "DVD-14") set running at 384 minutes. List price is $59.98 for this set, which comes in a special limited-edition "Parka" packaging that is sure to be a collectible item. 4x3 video and English Dolby Surround Sound represent the original over-the-air presentation of this show, and on the DVD you also get French and Spanish subtitles to choose from. The discs are closed captioned for the hearing impaired, too.

With such a short season, Universal didn't want to disappoint the fans with too short a DVD release, so they are adding some nice bonus material to this box set. Look for these extras:

Deleted Scenes
Video Documentary Footage
Mock Movie Footage
"Unexposed" Footage

This is a long-awaited, highly-anticipated release that fans have been clamoring for. Universal has delivered with a set that is sure to please everyone. Here's the look at the Parka packaging:

*likes to beat dead horses*

just wanted to point out that amazon changed their picture (see image two posts above) so you can kind of see what the real cover looks like now. it's not bad. not great, but not bad. i'm undecided.

i'll need to see more.

Arctic

after deeper consideration, i've decided.

i do not like this cover, nor the parka thing.

there's too much focus on Joel Fleishman, and this show is not just about Fleishman. the whole reason he left the show in the fifth season was because he thought it *was* about him and so demanded a hefty raise, which CBS rightfully did not give him.

so no i am not happy about the cover. 40 bucks says i will still buy it though.

australia's cover, for your comparison:

Yup lotsa love for us Australians.... even though I no longer live there.
I used to watch Northern Exposure- but haven't seen it since I moved to the US.

I don't think so. It was on A&E for many years, then the Hallmark channel briefly. But the last time I did a title search on my digital cable nothing came up.

Well, I just finished watching all of Northern Exposure Season 1 last night.

Review coming soon. I'm trying to get it done today... but we'll see, depends on how much time I have tonight since I have to go see Anchorman.

Pretty nice though. Arctic... I really LIKED the parka on it. I'm not sure that it really serves any purpose... but it's pretty unique and kinda cool really. Like the way it zips up around the case.

A Flieschman-centric cover is very appropriate after watching it. Later in its run the show became more and more about the other characters in the town, but those first 8 episodes the show is really about Joel's journey. Each episode has other stories wrapped around his, but his is the thing that connects them alltogether and drives what's happening.

It is dissapointing that there aren't more than 8 episodes, but that's all of season 1, so there ya go.

I'll be interested to read your review Hobbit, I haven't picked up them up yet.

got this for my birthday actually. it's what i expected. great show, not enough extras. i was really hoping this would be a big improvement on the UK discs, but it was not to be. i'm glad it was released in R1 finally though, and glad i got it as a gift, as i was really resenting the $40/8 eps thing.

decent review hobbit.

I think I've gotten rusty on reviewing DVD's. :\

The price is a bit rediculous for what you get isn't it Arctic?

Did you watch any of the extras? They're all so BORING.

Brian

I'd like to get this DVD, but I'm not so sure, especially with the price. However, the Trailer Park Boys DVDs have even less episodes for $50.

When subsequent seasons come out, Best Buy usually puts sets on sale. Maybe I'll wait until season two is released to buy season one.

Great review though Josh. Who says you're getting rusty?

Josh

Me. I had to struggle with that one. Not totally happy with it. :(

It's alright though.

Thought that was a rather dandy review Hobbit.
As far as the price, considering before these the only way you could get them was VHS for $29.95 per episode, it doesn't bother me all that much. Although I am a bit dissappointed to hear that the xtras are so lack luster.

Brian

I just read that there are already plans for a Second Season. It'll have all 7 episodes but the price is gonna be steep; around $50-60. It'll have a parka cover, too.

:groan just when i thought the packaging couldn't possibly get any worse. season one looks great in comparison to this crap.

season 2 comes out on November 2.

exactly how much are they planning on charging for season three with its 23 episodes, i wonder.

I can't afford all these shows that I want to see! I have a house to build!!!

Does Netflix rent this TV sets? If so, I might finally have to join NetFlix.

(psst... Hobbit.. I'll send you those free Farscape dvds if you send me the NE dvd. Then I'll send it back!)

Arctic
08-01-2004, 03:11 PM
yeah you can rent NX from Netflix. (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?trkid=73&movieid=60037347)

also, The Hallmark Channel is showing NX again at 1am ET/PT. (http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/us_framework.jsp?BODY=program.jsp&CONTENT=DAM_FAM_909976) you may or may not get the hallmark channel. if you don't get it, don't feel too deprived, as hallmark is notorious for butchering the episodes to fit constrained time limits.

we really need to start a dvd exchange program or something. if i plan on having kids anytime soon, i'll have to kick this dvd habit.

Matt
08-01-2004, 03:32 PM
yeah a dvd exchange would be awesome.

I don't have Hallmark on Dish (at least my package) but thanks for the heads up on them cutting show times. Ugh.

I need to sign up for Netflix.

Brian

I've been thinking about signing up for one of the Canadian alternatives for some time. It's looking more attractive every day.

season three has been announced.

From Universal Studios Home Entertainment comes Northern Exposure - Season 3 on May 10, 2005. Reunite with the quirky, endearing citizens of Cicely, Alaska for the best Northern Exposure season yet. Nominated for an astonishing 16 Emmy Awards and the winner of six, including Outstanding Drama Series, this is the must-own season of one of television's most original series. Packed with 23 hilarious and touching episodes and loaded with never-before-seen extras, there's never been a better time to own Northern Exposure on DVD. Priced at $59.98 SRP.

23 eps for $60 is somewhat of a better deal, and i'm glad the series is at least still getting released, but i really hope they have the decency to leave everything intact this time around.

Nice to finally get more than 8!

They really should have combined Season 1 & 2 into one set.

Slider's did that. Gives your fans more value.

I just got 12 dvds from my friend with 6 eps a piece on them. They're VHS quality, but she edited all the commercials out and the episodes are in order. She's working on a few more, so I'm a happy guy.

wiggum you're a lucky guy. if i had a dvd burner i'd consider doing it that way as well. of course my vhs copies are so well worn that i'm not sure it'd be worth it. my brother once divx'd me seasons 5 and 6 that he downloaded, but the quality just isn't that great. i'll be keeping an eye out for your listings on ebay. ;)

Okay finally got NE season 1 from Netflix. I've only watched the first two episodes. I don't think I ever saw the first season. The first season gives a great amount of backstory. In today's tv world... we would have started the show with dr. fleishmann being dropped off at Minnifields and they would have just quickly went through the backstory.

This is a "who's online" thread bump.

I think tonight, being a Friday, and me not having any urge to go out. I'm going to bust out the NX dvd's I have and just lay the **** down.
