I've been an absolute slug today. Laying about watching movies for hours.
I just finished "Amelie". I hadn't seen it until now and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I absolutely loved it. What a sweet little movie. I think it may be one of my new favorites.
An old movie that I'd never seen before (but had picked up many, many times and then put down) was Hope and Glory. It too was a lovely film too.
Rewatched American Beauty for the fifty-ith time because I love it and can watch it over and over. "**** me your Highness!!!" gets me everytime.
Also watched Big Trouble. Not terrible...but didn't quite hit it's mark either.

I made quite the discovery recently: libraries are a superb source for quality movies and documentaries. They generally don't have a very large selection -- nothing like a proper video store -- but not many people seem to make use of it. They are also damn cheep, like 50 cents (but you can only keep them two days -- although if you keep them more, you pay 25 cents extra, so in all, I think it's still cheaper than a normal video store).
Gotten some really cool stuff, like a series on the crusades by Terry Jones, which was extremely informative, and also damn funny. And another called Islam: Empire of Faith, which wasn't funny but damn informative.
Most recently I got two great classical flicks:
Mister Roberts, which is just fantastic -- a war movie, that doesn't show a single shot fired. It shows the crew on a cargo ship that struggles with the boredom of being left out of the glorious, heroic action of war, doing mundane shipping duties. A surprisingly deep and moving flick, that stars John Fonda in the main role, with Jack Lemon and James Cagney in supporting role (Lemon got an Oscar for this one)-- directed by John Ford. Highly recommended. It's got an 8.0 rating on imdb.com, which is very, very high.
A Raisin in the Sun: great Sydney Poitier flick -- certainly not on level with Mister Roberts, but very good. Quite dark.

The opening scene, when he beats up the jewish student after getting off the subway......that's like a couple blocks from my place. All the subway shots showed my 'hood....they were all on the 7 Train. I was suprised when I saw that.
anyways, I watched:
Ricochet....I think it needs to be seen in widescreen because to "format fit to my TV screen was shaky". Other than that little nitpick, the film's pretty good. Lithgow needs more work. He was a total sick **** in that one. Kevin Pollack & Denzel deliver as well(I wouldn't expect any less). I especially liked the little Die Hard in joke at the very end.
The Hot Chick....The thing about all the Switcharoo movies is that the switchees usually know eachother. Usually it's Father & Son (Like Father, Like Son, Vice Versa) or Mother & Daughter (Freaky Friday, in all it's versions). Rarely do you see Rob Schneiders REAL character except for a couple times. Other than that this flick had a few chuckles here and there. But that's mostly it.
Punch Drunk Love....Been meaning to see this for a while. At first it was a bit confusing. But after a while I settled in. Definately a good performance from Sandler. Him & Watson do make an odd couple. I mean if you look at Watson's cinematic track record Sandler seems out of place...Robert Carlyle, Daniel Day Lewis, Ralph Fienes. But it works. Philip Seymour Hoffman was okay, I've seen better from him. Then again he was only in like 3 or 4 scenes.

Revenge Of The Nerds (1984)
One of a few 80s comedies that still holds up to this day I'd say.
Funny stuff.
What's even funnier is, I watched this on German TV a couple of years ago and they didn't know how to translate "Nerd" into German.
Instead of "Nerd" they said stuff like "shithead" or "egghead" which really didn't make any sense and kinda ruined the whole movie on all accounts.
Another word they seem to have trouble translating into German is "****".

Wild Wild West - Used to love this movie as a kid, and I still think it's fun, but I can see why people have a problem with it. Funny dialogue, spirited performances, beautiful production design, seamless effects and a good pace, but a lot of "weird" moments, and I'm still not sure what the point of Salma Hayak's character was. ***1/2

Gangs of New York....Here's an idea....just a though...Irish people as Irish people, or at least from the U.K. Here you have a movie...shot in Italy, by an Italian Director, Italian & latino stars. And the best performance from someone from the UK was playing someone who was nowhere near it (Day-Lewis). and I know Sean Astin kicked ass in some epic films as of late, but don't try and dig up old child stars for epics, unless they can shake off they're childhood past like Astin did. Finally watched "Cannibal Holocaust 2: The Catherine Miles Story" the unofficial sequel to the notorious gorefest.
And nothing could be further from the original. This story features almost no OTT gore or shock value whatsoever. What there is is a few cheesy low-fi (by even cannibal movie standard) effects and a female lead who spends most of the movie topless. Oh and the obligatory needless animal violence.
And that's about it. Makes the fatal mistake of just being plain boring.

I can deal with an Italin director shooting in Italy. It's not like you could actully have shot it in New York. The only Irish director who might have handled the material well is Jim Sheridan, but he's better at smaller films, anyway.
But the casting just killed it. DiCaprio as an Irishman? And a bland one, at all. He takes a stab at the accent every few mintues and it's just weak. Henry Thomas I can deal with, because he at least looks the part. But what really kills me is Cameron Diaz. DIAZ, who doesn't look even a wee bit Irish, sports the most embarrassing "accent" I have ever heard, and has too modern a face to work in that setting. It's the casting that ultimately kills the movie for me. That, and the worn-out revenge story, the contrived love story, and the huge holes in logic throughout.

The Fantastic Four (1994)***1/2
Low budget schlock horror supremo Roger Corman owned the rights the Fantastic Four movie licence back in the 90s, but in 1994 if he didn't do something with it his rights would lapse. So to counter this he stumped up $1.5Million and put one in to production.
Some say it was never released because it was so bad, but Marvel guru Stan Lee has revealed that unbeknownst to cast and crew, Corman never nad any intention of releasing the film commercially, it was merely a shrewd money/licence saving scam.
So, to this day, The Fantastic Four has never been available to rent or buy. Only pirate VHS copies at sci-fi fairs and now online transfers of the VHS on file sharing networks are available.
Which is rather unfair. TFF is neither bad enough to to be derided nor good enough to have the OTT camp value of something like Flash Gordon. But what it is is a movie that was made 15 years after it's time. Had this been made in the late 70s rather than the mid 90s it would have been no different to the Spiderman TV movies and low budget Dr Strange comic-book movies of that time.
The costumes, from the ridiculous spandex to Dr Doom to The Thing are all faithful to their comic roots, the script is rather cheesy, the effects are low budget and the score is suitably pompous but somehow that all works in it's favour. For all it's cheapness it has some intangible charm.
My advice - pretend you are watching one of the 70s DTV superhero movies (which isn't hard coz they do exist and this has the same look and feel. If you were born in the late 70s you're bound to remember them) and you'll have a rather cheesy but enjoyable time.

Same here:
Die Another Day - Haven't seen this I saw it in theaters in December 2002 with two of my friends, who both agreed with me that it was "goofy," but entertaining. And we all agreed on a grade of **1/2 out of 5 stars. After this second viewing, I see that it is an entertaining, but still pretty goofy movie. The action sequences are fun and outlandish, and they have a lot of nice little "whoa" moments. The slow-motion stuff and the speeding of the film is a little too 2002 for my taste. I know the Bond films usually end up reflecting the times, but couldn't they have reflected a better fad?
The movie does get a little long in the tooth, and Halle Berry is pretty bad (no, this is not blatant Berry bashing, she's just not very good here).
In watching this entry, I realized that there are two kinds of Bond films: the realistic take (Goldeneye, For Your Eyes Only), and the outlandish, extrvangantly silly globe-throttling yarn (basically, all of the Roger Moores). Die Another Day falls into the category of the second kind. What I do like is that it is not as dull as TWINE, or as dull AND mechanical as Tomorrow Never Dies. The producers's didn't just treat this as the "new Bond film," they actually attempted to make an enjoyable action movie.
I just find it funny that the two chicks Bond screwed ended up fighting each-other.

The Battle of Shaker Heights....Having watched the second season of Project Greenlight, watching the whole making of made it seem like this flick was a huge disaster in the making. However Kyle Rankin & Eframm Potell pulled it off. They finished a the flick, and it turned out okay. Though it was a bit skimpy. Watching the PGL episodes where they were pressured to edit the movie again and again. You tend to question the logic. The flick clocks in at 76 minutes. You'd think they'd have left an additional 15 minutes or so in it, I mean It seemed a bit short. As if Shaker Heights was a TV show itself.
Groundhog Day....In honor of this pointless American Holiday, I caught this on Cinemax earlier. Still funny after all these years. Murray is Gold.
