I'm going to read this later. I plan on trading in my Gamecube soon, and I'm really curious to see when these new concoles are coming.

The next gen console race is gonna be a two-horse shot unless Nintendo pull something spectacular out of the bag. Which I doubt, they are fast going the way of Sega and I agree with the article could easily see them shifting to focussing solely on portable hardware devices rather than consoles in the next five years.
As for PS3 vs XBox2... who knows. Sony's certainly dressing to impress with it's PSX and PSP planned for next year. Can they follow it up?
And XBox2 needs to distance itself from it's predecessors PC-based roots (image-wise if nothing else) if it is gonna survive. Else your as well buying a PC... it does more and is just as bulky these days :p

The X-Box 2 design is nice, but not being able to play games from the original X-Box would be a major drag. It doesn't say if you can play PS2 games on the PS3, but if tradition follows, that would be nice. Because the price of the games and the uncertainty about the release date of the new console, I'm not going to hold off on a PS2.

I would think you will be able to play PS2 games on the PS3...

Unless I decide to let my computer go to the pits, I probably won't get any of these consoles, though if I were to get one, it would be a PS3.

You're a PC guy, huh? nice.
If XBox 2 really isn't backwards compatible... they are doomed.
That would be the stupidest thing they could possibly do. How could they even consider it??
It also better not lose the harddrive. That's one of the best things about it. Asian markets don't care, but Japan is becoming irrelevant.
And if Halo 2 gets delayed to be on XBox 2... I'm gonna kill someone.
I've been more and more skeptical when buying consoles ever since the 'nex-gen' consoles started coming out. Just a few months ago, I got interested in GameCube, and we picked one up. I've very pleased with it so far. I've always loathed X Box, and I bought a PS2 about a year after it came out, which I pretty much only use as a DVD player nowadays. As for the newer systems coming out, I'm looking foward to the PS3. As Tay said, Microsoft needs to distance the X Box from it's PC roots, because that's essentially what it is. I'm afraid Nintendo is going to be left in the cold after GameCube runs it's 15 minutes of fame, oh well. We'll see.

PS3 has been confirmed as being backwards compatible. Read it in a magazine article.

Right, it is only XBox 2 that is being rumored NOT to be.
Thankfully, it is only a stupid rumor right now.
