Favorite: VII yeah sure its main stream and took Final Fantasy on the road to where X2 is now, but come on you can't hate this game. For one thing the plot is awesome as are the characters, it Pioneered CGI in games (good or bad thing depending on who you are) has one of the coolest universes in any work of Sci Fi or Fantasy Period, and is just an all around great game.
Least Favorite: VIII, um yeah, what was that shit. From the incredably stupid Weapons and Magic system which means you can't get weapons without dicking around looking for magazines and playing that ****ing UNFUN card game, the magic system which was a poor idea at best. The Limit Breaks are shit, the story is crap just horrid FF1 find the wizard shit, theres not a single character to care about even on the vaguest surface level and its an all around crap game. On the positive side the ending is pretty damn sweet.

Final Fantasy VII is my least favorite. It was a good game, but it isn't nearly as great as most people hype it as. The materia system was neat, but I think it set an unfortunate precedent in Final Fantasy games because it pretty much decimated any sort of character uniqueness in relation to their abilities and your needs in a fight.
Final Fantasy X and VIII are my favorites. I loved VIII's story (a love story first, "saving the world" story second). Call me a sap, but some parts of that game brought on the tears (like when Squall and Rinoa are trapped in the Ragnarok, and Faye Wong's "Eyes on Me" is playing). The characters were great, and Gunblades are just the coolest damned weapons ever. The draw/junction system was different, for sure, but I didn't dislike it. It was also a huge leap ahead in the graphics department compared to VII. Tetra Master was fun too. I spent a lot of time playing that.
X is also a fantastic game. It is first and foremost simply beautiful. It has a wonderful story, and on top of that the characters have a lot of depth. I think you can actually relate to the characters as people, as opposed to dolls with statistics attatched to them (same with 8). I did miss flying airships in X, though.

I only actually own FFVII but as far as I know, it's the best. I've played most of the others but only on friend's systems or through roms.

Yeah FF7 put it on hiatus but FF9 F10 brought it back full swing. Of course FFX-2 seems to have screwed it up again but that's another story.

FF6. It's the most complete Final Fantasy of them all, and none of the newer Final Fantasy games would have come to frutition if it wasnt for 6. It's highly ambitious, epic in scope and scale, and less reliant upon CGI and graphics and more reliant upon the gameplay and the controls interface. Endearing characters that don't play up the whole angst thing like later games. And the soundtrack is classic.
