View Full Version : The Crib's Mix of the Week/What's in Your Player Thread
GreenTShirt 01-10-2004, 03:47 PM Home, car, Walkman, computer....we've all got CD's playing somewhere.
I want a running commentary on what you're listening to. Tell me why I should be listening to it too.
I have a five disc changer in the family room, a portable in the bedroom, one in the car, and one in the computer. At any given time there's a disc or two in each one.
Currently in the car we've got the soundtrack to Rushmore. I got it for Dave for Christmas and he's been listening to it non-stop since. It's such a happy, larkish type of music. I don't know why it took me this long to get it for him. One of those things where you just forget about it for a long time I guess.
In my family room I've got two Rosemary Clooney CDs...16 greatest hits and Jazz singer. I got on a Clooney kick a couple of months ago after I heard her on Fresh Air or something. She has such a gorgeous voice. I can listen to "Hey There" over and over and not get sick of it. I've also got the complete Ella Fitzgerald in heavy rotation right now. I'm in a mood I guess. A few weeks ago it was The Strokes, Oasis, and Harvey Danger. Go figure.
My daughters both have walkmans on half the time. They like the bubblegum pop like Britney, Christina, Justin, etc. I'm glad they use the headphones because I'd get sick of that stuff in a hurry.
So...what are you listening to?
The Reel Yapper 01-11-2004, 04:28 PM Been on a Bowie kick lately...
I listen to his moodier works, like Heathen, when I'm writing. I've also been jammin' to Diamond Dogs, and last night, I put Low on the vinyl player (roommate's copy - would steal if I knew she wasn't Queen of the Litigious).
Also, been listening to a mix whipped up by my girlfriend in California... songs for long-distance couples and whatnot. Includes Coldplay, Incubus, Bif Naked, Stuart Davis (on my insistence), Mazzy Starr, and Joni Mitchell (actually, the original mix contains a Tori Amos cover of a Joni Mitchell song, but I switched to the original and best).
Finally, found an old Mix CD of mine that really encapsulates my tastes, including the Buffy theme, Black '47, Dan Bern, Elvis Costello, Joy Division, Anthony Stewart Had, Dispatch, Ben Folds Five, Oingo Boing, Cibo Matto, David Bowie, and finishes with Eric Clapton - Leila.
Ragen 01-11-2004, 04:51 PM living room

car
-matchbox twenty - More Than You Think You Are
GreenTShirt 01-11-2004, 05:58 PM Ragen, my husband got me Dirty Little Thoughts for Christmas and I love it. I had heard "Little Black Backpack" a long time ago and forgot all about it.
Dave picked it up in a used store thinking it was "The Strokes" and when I saw that song on there I told him he did good without even knowing it. Since then I've been listening to the whole album and it's good!
I'm also a big lover of Matchbox 20. I love Mad Season...the whole album...favorite song is Last Beautiful Girl. I still have to pick up More Than You Think...it's on my list of discs to buy!
garfield hates mondays 01-11-2004, 06:22 PM I've been listening to the American Beauty soundtrack a lot lately. Just got it from the library and then burned a copy:D
NotSoSecretAgent 01-11-2004, 06:27 PM Rotating between a mix CD I made for friends (but I made a copy for myself, too) and Phantom Planet's new album.
Nate, I didn't know you were a Joy Divison fan. They're my favorite band. *looks at signature*
The Reel Yapper 01-11-2004, 09:20 PM Not fanatical, but I enjoy their work a bunch.
Christine 01-11-2004, 09:43 PM my current top five:
Shakira - Laundry service
Alana Davis - Blame it on me
Tori Amos - Scarlet's walk
Belly - King
Norah Jones - Come away with me

The only CD player I really ever use for listening to music is my car deck. If I'm listening to music inside, I just use Winamp, and play my mp3's through my surround system. Anyway,
Car Deck: Burned copy of 36 Crazyfists - A Snow Capped Romance/Story of the Year - Page Avenue
Queued in Winamp currently: The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King soundtrack
7therror 01-13-2004, 11:27 PM Right now I'm listening to A Perfect Circle: Mer de Noms.
Nice choice, 7th!
Currently in my car stereo: Hoobastank - The Reason
Excellent album. I've probably already listened to it 10 times through now in the car.
Bluntchop 01-14-2004, 03:11 PM NP: Whodini - Magic Wand
Vainglory 01-17-2004, 01:47 AM I've been on a big Real McKenzies kick lately, with some Planet Smashers thrown in there for good measure. And I've been listening to Louis Armstrong quite a bit recently. *shrugs*
I just burned every album The Offspring have made today, so Smash is in the car deck right now.
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape (been in my player for about 6 years :D)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mother's Milk
Jane's Addiction - Strays
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
They Might Be Giants - Mink Car

Abscynthe 02-05-2004, 10:10 AM I usually have it set to Winamp in the computer room. My husband is one of those people that gets a song stuck in his head at a moment's notice and has to listen to it to get it out, so we have just about everything you can name. It takes me forever to go through all the mp3s we have to find something to listen to, so I usually just have a movie playing in the background. Or, if I'm doing something active, I'll turn it to one of the music stations on our satellite. They've just recently added a Big Band station, which I love.
In my car CD player I have Poison's Greatest Hits 1986-1996. Hair metal at it's finest baby!
7therror 02-07-2004, 01:00 AM Ron White - Drunk in Public

Bluntchop 02-11-2004, 11:43 AM Just tossing around an idea ... How about listing your current ten most favorite songs of the moment, day, week, month, hour or whatever.
Kinda like a permanent top ten list that you can edit to add or rearrange whenever you feel up to it. Mine, as for now:
01 (-) CHEVELLE - Send The Pain Below
02 (-) FOO FIGHTERS - Have It All
03 (-) DROWNING POOL - Sinner
04 (-) KID ROCK - Hillbilly Stomp
05 (-) VENDETTA RED - Shatterday
06 (-) (HED) PLANET EARTH - Flesh & Bone
07 (-) TRAPT - Echo
08 (-) SEETHER - Gasoline
09 (-) POWERMAN 5000 - A Is For Apathy
10 (-) SPINESHANK - Forgotten
garfield hates mondays 02-11-2004, 11:46 AM maybe we could try and think of a way to merge this idea with the what are you listening to thread.
Whoozer?
GreenTShirt 02-11-2004, 11:56 AM hmmmm...we have the what's in your player thread....should we put them together? I'm not sure. Maybe we can make a "Your perfect mix this week" kind of thread out of this idea? So that as new songs become hot we can make a new mix?
Does that sound like an idea worth pursuing?
Bluntchop 02-11-2004, 12:02 PM Sounds ok to me :)
garfield hates mondays 02-11-2004, 12:04 PM yeah that would be good...
now if we could only think of a way to the what are you playing one with it and reduce the number of stickies...
GreenTShirt 02-11-2004, 02:45 PM Okay so I renamed this thread and merged the two together.
From here on out it's all about posting your mix of the week. What are you jammin' to? Maybe every Friday we can pick the person's mix we like the best and give them a little shout out.
Ragen 02-16-2004, 03:54 PM Jason Mraz and Matchbox Twenty are "it" this week for me
Brian 02-19-2004, 02:17 PM Incubus and Basement Jaxx's new CDs.
crappertay 02-26-2004, 12:07 PM Basement Jaxx
:dance
I'm the only person I know who appreciates the greatness of Lucky Star!
GreenTShirt 02-26-2004, 02:02 PM I've been listening to Strange Magic, the Very Best of ELO. It's a double disc that I loooove. Every song is so great. ELO is so underated!
Tantric - After We Go
Awesome album. If you want any more comments, click here to go to the thread that I made in this forum about this album, and that apparently I'm the only person on this board that listens to Tantric. (http://www.filmhobbit.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=8402) :rant
drunknmunky 03-08-2004, 03:56 AM i only saw Tay & Tripolie post about basement jaxx , electronic dance music is really all i listen to. My ears enjoy variations from down-tempo trip hop to drum & bass to techno, but my true passion is house music. A steady 4x4 beat with some funky bass, jazzy piano and soulful lyrics. Some of my mixes blend between Hard disco/80's/R&B/HipHop remixes/bootlegs. I have mixes up online at www.hermpie.com . Its a great website w/djs from around the globe. Im under D.Js/TheoG. All mixes are free (all u have to do is a painless registration) & around 20 of my mixes are hosted ranging from 30-70mins- please ck out 1 or 10 & either P.M me or post here. I'd love to hear your comments-

Abscynthe 03-09-2004, 09:22 PM I've been listening to a burned CD I made with punk and Elvis on it. I also have a CD I made for when I work out that has Rob Zombie, D.R.I, Knuckle Duster, and some random punk. Fast paced enough to keep me going on that elliptical trainer!
tagalong 03-17-2004, 09:14 PM Is anyone else sick of all the recent rap/hip-hop songs that sound all the same with weak rhymes and new artists thinking they're the ****? I know I hate hearing the same bad music evey channel I turn to on the radio.
Brian 03-27-2004, 11:20 PM Here's some CDs I bought/listen to recently:
Franz Ferdinand - Self Titles
The Vines - Winning Days
The Von Bondies - Pawn Shoppe Heart
The Get Up Kids - Guilt Show
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
