This movie may just work if only because of Jack Black. I also have high hopes for this- and who knows, maybe it'll create a movement to make more wrestling movies that don't suck. Or not.
If anything, it's kind of making fun of wrestling... the Mexican variety anyway.
Dude, everyone makes fun of Mexican Lucha Libre. Too many masks, little in the way of um, storytelling, and cheap production values.
And to the wrestling fans, this is a longtime fan of the Guerreros, Rey Misterio, Psicosis, La Parka, Hector Garza, Amazing Red, and Super Crazy talking.
Right, that's kind of my point. It's not a wrestling movie, it's more of a wrestling parody, so comparing it to these other wrestling movies you speak of and expecting it to revive the genre makes about as much sense as Dodgeball spawning a whole series of films about Dodgeball.
That's just not going to happen. One has little to do with the other.
Even a movie mocking wrestling in a good way- not in a Ready to Rumble way- is a step up. And you never know how things will work out. I'm not holding my breath, by any means here. That being said, Jack Black + wrestling movie= genius.
