This is going to completely and utterly rock. I cannot wait.

The trailers and footage really seem as though they've hit the book perfectly...

Hmm. Having read the books i fully expect the story to be horribly butchered. But the trailers so far have looked really good. I think i'll still be giving it a chance though.

I got this forward in my email today.

Quote:
Subject: Fw: "Golden Compass"

Subject: NBBC Alert: Golden Compass "children's" movie
Importance: High
THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a new movie targeted at children, will be released
December 7,
2007. This movie is based on a the first book of a trilogy by atheist Philip
Pullman. In the final book a boy and girl kill God so they can do as they
please.
Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003
interview that
"My books are about killing God."
The movie is a watered down version of the first book and is designed to
be very
attractive in the hope unsuspecting parents will take their children to
see the
movie and that the children will want the books for Christmas.
The movie has a well known cast, including Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon, and
Sam
Elliott. It will probably be advertised extensively, so it is crucial that
we get
the word out to warn parents to avoid this movie.
You can research this for yourself. Start with this article on Snopes.com
, then go
to Google.

You just have to admire the organisation of the religious crazies, they are one committed bunch.

At least it is accurate though. The books haven't exactly tried to conceal their subject matter at any stage, so how about people make up their own minds on whether to watch it or not. Would that be too much to ask?

Apparently yes.

The other half and I both got that email yesterday as well, and not as a forwarded thing from a friend. It's gone to spam.

And it's not working. After getting lectured at work about the evils of celebrating Halloween and reading this email I'm actually interested in seeing it - and I've never even heard of the series.

Faith is strong... except in the face of fiction. Why do these wacko fringe types get so insecure over made up stories if their faith is so strong. We non-believers are going to hell anyway so let us watch what blasphemous crap we want. We're not trying to ban Easter for Chrissakes.

Nobody sees the irony either, in a book about killing God being promoted as a Christmas gift.

Eh, Christians stole the 25th December from Mithras anyway.

Every time I hear about God as a character being killed in a book or movie I always think back to Star Trek V.

Just to stir up a little controversy...

Personally I find it dissappointing (but predictable) that people are OK with a Christian movie targeted towards children (Narnia), but they aren't ok with an anti-God movie targeted at Children.

And by the way... the person who sent Matt's email is certainly oversimplyfying it. They don't kill God so they can "do as they please". Typical anti-Atheist propaganda. Pathetic.

They kill god because he's kind of a prick and he's holding mankind back. It has nothing to do with not wanting to have consequences for their actions.

I don't really understand how the creator of mankind could hold us back... If there is a God, which I believe there is and he has a path for all of us, there wouldn't be any life without him, right?

Because God isn't God, he's a power mad angel pretending to be God. In the books, there is no real God.

Quote:
Pullman portrays the Christian heaven to be a lie. In the third book, the real afterlife is depicted as a bleak place where people are tormented by harpies until Lyra and Will descend into the land of the dead. Through their intercession, the harpies agree to stop tormenting the dead souls, and instead receive the true stories of the dead in exchange for leading them again to the upper world. When the dead souls emerge, they dissolve as they become one with the universe.

Pullman's "Authority" is worshipped on Lyra's earth as God, but he turns out to be the first angel instead. It is explicitly stated that the Authority was in fact not the creator of worlds.

Nice save

(i'm joking)

The fact that there have been these e-mails circulating hasn't surprised me in the least. In fact i had half thought they would be organising picket schedules already. Also I wonder will McDonalds have Golden Compass toys in its Happy Meals?

Yeah. You do have to realize that the "god" in the Dark Materials books isn't really the god of christian beliefs. The "authority" is a misguided jerk face, who needs to be taken down. When you read the books I think that is made clear.

of course, it is an atheistic story...so, do with that what you will. Like choose not to watch it if that's an issue for you. I don't go to church because it doesn't jive with my horrible dirty non-beliefs. If i did, I certainly wouldn't whine about being preached to on the awesomeness of god.

Yes, but you did watch The Chronicles of Narnia didn't you? Everyone did.

You weren't afraid you'd be brainwashed to start going to Church.

It always strikes me as funny how religion is so afraid that the smallest question will lead people down a road of evil, godless, depraved debauchery.

Wouldn't you expect people's faith to be strong enough to not be swayed by such inconsequential attacks? ...but I digress. (Yea, I saw Narnia...frankly I was none to pleased by the stick method, as in being beaten over the head with a.)

I want to see this...originally just because I was interested. Saw the trailer attached to something. But now it's got the added bonus of being something that pisses off the rightwingers Yes, I am that shallow. Although I'm saddened by the review that they still think the tell, not show method is the best way. That'd get be a solid D on an English paper...

Side note, teddy bear sales wouldn't be hurting in a 18th century world as they didn't come around until the early 20th.
