I think it comes from two things...1) The Apple Lifestyle and 2) they make $500 devices to do something a $200 device could do...and that extra $300 is just branding. The actual device isn't $300 sturdier.
I think Volante nailed it for me. I don't so much hate Apple. They're just playing the market like it's meant to be played. I hate those god damn Apple-lifestyle people. The ones who think that just because it's Apple it's better. You know what, if it's because you wanted a trendy product, then just admit that! Because it is not a superior product! And like Volante said, you can get something that does the same thing for $300 less.
Maybe I feel it a lot more or something because I'm in university. But God damn near everyone uses a Mac! And all they use it for is MSN, browsing the net, and typing up reports! Jesus, you don't need $2,000 for that! You can do all that on a modest $500 Windows machine.
It's a little more understandable for the people in film with me, since they use their Macs to edit and stuff, but they've also been sold the idea that Final Cut Pro is the best system to edit on (many of them thought that it was the industry standard, which it is most definitely not). And the teachers don't help... ugh.
ANYWAY. As far as products like the iPod and iPhone go, what bothers me is what bothers the other people in this thread. The fact that they release new versions of everything every 6 months or so. And sure, car manufacturers do it, but the rest of the tech industry doesn't (at least not so badly). The main issue I have with the upgraded versions is that they immediately take the old version completely off the market. It let them keep a perpetual $500 price tag on it without much improvement along the way. And while with a car, or a new PC or almost anything else that releases new models frequently I still feel confident in my purchase for years down the line, for some reason Apple makes me feel like I just keep missing the boat. Like, if I got a previous iteration of an iPod shortly before a new generation comes along, I feel like I got screwed because the price doesn't even change. But if I'd got that same iPod when it had maybe dropped in price a bit, even if it was at the same time right before a new one was released, I'd still feel ok with it because I got it for a bit less.
****, I think I'm making this WAY more complex than it is, but there you have it anyway.
P.S. I think that anything that constantly re-releases similar products on a yearly basis without much improvement (cars, Madden NFL, etc) are all stupid. So don't bother comparing Apple to them.

Your P.S. makes no sense. If they all make minor improvements, they are related.
Yeah, they may be related, but my point was that bringing them up in an argument against my stance wouldn't do anything since I also think all those other things are stupid too. I'm just using Apple because that's what this thread is about, but I could go on a rant about Madden NFL getting constantly re-released being stupid too.
I just didn't want to see the same reply is all. Since I figured that's where this would be heading once again.
It's not stupid though. If the market demands it, it's genius. There is no way any of us would not release second editions of anything if we thought we make more money off of it.
However, if you don't like that companies are holding back certain things, just don't buy from em. That's just it.
When the people are less willing to spend more money for something better, companies will stop wasting their time and resources improving things.

You hate the people who are in love with Apple because they continue to buy upgraded products?

Yes. They continue to buy unnecessarily upgraded products. I know the market is based on upgrading regularly, and we've been over that. But like you and Matt said, Apple continues to get away with shitty and useless upgrades because people want them.
Anyway, I don't think this is really going anywhere. I'm done arguing about it for now. Either my mindset about this can't be conveyed properly, or you all just think I'm being a moron. Either way, it seems I lose this one.
I never said anything about the mac upgrades being shitty or useless. In fact earlier I said that the ipod upgrades have all been significant (changes to the design as well as the way they function). I cant comment on the Mac upgrades because I dont own a mac computer. I prefer Windows.
I just dont see how what mac/apple does with their computers, operating systems and mp3 players is all that different than what other electronics companies do with their products.
I dont think you're being a moron at all pwalex.

I really love listening to podcasts but I need a bigger player than the current iPod shuffle that we have at the house (I got it used for 29 bucks. FTW) So what would you guys recommend.
I do normally download podcasts from Itunes but can I search lots of podcasts at places like Podcast Alley?
So recommend me a cheaper/better mp3 player than the iPod Nano.
There's a Dis podcast that i know Steve listens to regularly. I dont remember what its called but I'm pretty sure it's affiliated with the Dis board or wdwinfo.
You could also get the RDM BSG podcasts. They're like episode commentaries... with cigarettes and scotch.
