I think Chewie dies in the very first New Jedi Order book. That's the one to read too... it's pretty good. I forget what it is called, but it is the only one by R.A. Salvatore. Read that one.
The book is good, even if Chewie's death is stupid.
Originally posted by Matt I was under the impression the New Jedi Order books were for teenagers. Is that wrong? I mean, I'll still read it, but that's why I've avoided them.
No, they aren't.
You're thinking of something else, I believe those are the YOUNG JEDI series.
The NJO books are worth reading, Josh? Maybe I'll give 'em a shot, then. I've never been interested.
I've read alot of books that aren't that good, Matt, just because I'm a fan. I don't know how much of a fan you are, whether you want your books well written or you just want to read a good Star Wars story regardless of writing.
I think the best non-Zahn books are the Black Fleet Crisis. Very well written, the characters are realized far better than most books and it's a great story as well. They don't betray the characters to make something cool happen, and that's especially true with Leia. Leia's a politician, not some commando, and alot of books get her going off on adventures that don't make sense for her position. The best part of them is that Lobot is a main character.
Simple storyline is that there's a new race of xenophobic aliens that have managed to amass a large fleet of Star Destroyers and are using it to wipe out all life in their cluster of planets. Leia wants to stop it, but she's accused of war mongering by the senate. Chewie's busy raising his son, and Luke is out with some girl looking for his mother. I know that last one sounds stupid, but it makes sense when you see it through. It's also the very rare time that they bother to give Luke any character growth, which is great.
Before the Storm, Shield of Lies and I can't remember the third book. Definately worth reading.
The Courtship of Princess Leia spends too much time on Sci-Fi rather than story, the biggest weakness of most of the books to me, but it's not that bad. It'll make you hate women. When it's not going into too much detail about Sabaac or technology or various aliens it's an interesting story and tells an important part of the EU. Plus, you get the line "Kiss my Wookie!!!"
The Han Solo trilogy also sounds really bad when it talks about ships and technology and is poorly written when it's doing things like rehashing the story so far or doing inner monologue. However, the story is very good. It tells of Han beginning his life seeing the galaxy, Leia's predecesors, how he joins and gets kicked out of the Imperial Navy, how he gets to work with Jabba, how he meets Chewie, how he meets Lando (and Boba Fett at the same time) and how he meets "the old man" and "the kid." It starts from his first job as a smuggler and ends with him in the cantina on Tatooine.
The Paradise Snare, the Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn.
My FAVORITE of all the Star Wars books, by far, though, are the Hand of Thrawn books. Timoth Zahn again. The first one is good enough, but it's a set up for the second book which is behind only the Tolkien books and to Kill a Mockingbird on my list of favorite books. Just great stuff. If you've read the Thrawn trilogy you know how good Zahn is and he's armed with an absolutely terrific story, too.
Spectre of the Past and Vision of the Future. Awesome books.
Anything by Kevin J. Anderson is a poor story that's decently written, the opposite of most Star Wars books. Some of his ideas are ok, but he spends too much time writing ridiculous things. Man Darksaber was a bad story. I hated that. At least it had the guts to kill a semi-main character.
Michael A. Stackpole is, too me, the worst. I struggled through two, torturous Rogue Squadron books and quit. Not a bad story at all, really, but just so poorly written. The dialogue maid blood gush out of my ears so far the walls are still stained.
I think the best book is the Essential Cronology. It's like a Star Wars history text book. Tells ya the whole story of Star Wars from the beginning of the Old Republic to the story so far (when it was made) in the New Jedi Order. It lets you cover all the books that you haven't yet read.
I read IG-88, Boba fett and Dengar out of Tales of the Bounty Hunters.
Boba Fett was great. IG-88 was horrible beyond all reason. Guess who! Kevin J. Anderson. There were 4 IG-88s, and one of them became the Death Star.

Kevin J. Anderson is the author to avoid. He's terrible.
.
That doesn't go far enough though.
From an earlier post.
Kevin J. Anderson might be the worst writer ever, in this world or any. He has scepter that is made of shit and sits on a throne of human bones as he types his next work of horror on a computer made from the ligiments of the damned wearing a crown made of the blackest metal decorated with the bones of puppies.
Darksaber. . . MAN Darksaber was bad.
Luke goes back to Hoth and encounters a bunch of people that are trapped by Wampas. They have to fight their way out and GUESS who the leader of the Wampas is? I'll give you a hint, he only has one arm.
I understand this is most likely a crib thing, but with all the Star Wars discussion here I decided to post in in Main. If you want to move it, do so.
For all of those (like Deus) that ask the questions like "where is it written?" and want support for Star Wars discussion, this is the program. Star Wars: Behind the Magic
It covers basically everything that's from the official Lucas Film Ltd. story. It's far more in depth than the Databank, has tons of pictures and covers both behind the scenes stuff and fictional stuff. Also has the scripts in full. Predates the prequels, but it does have Phantom Menace section. It was released while PT was in its final stages.
Not really any EU, so it's not the place to go if that's what you want. It only includes the EU that LFT accepts as part of the story. Which isn't much (Mara Jade, but not Kyp Durron).
Also has lots little fun games. A Millenium Falcon 3D tour, weapons tests on hapless stormtroopers, trivia and a Princess Leia fashion show. Also includes a complete list of all the (until that time) action figures.
