Keaton is Batman. No one else (not even Bale I think) can hold up to the performances he gave.
The movie was the perfect blend of dark and comic. It kept to the story, had great gadgets without being outrageous and featured my favorite villain performance in any of the Batman films. It was the only Batman movie where I bought that Gotham was a real city somewhere.

Definately a 5. One of my favorite movies of all time and right there with Spider-Man on the super hero movie meter. (Sorry, I can't stand Superman.)
When I was little it was entertaining because it was Batman. As I've grown up, I've realized it really is a very well-crafted movie.
I think it's definately not as good as most people say it is, but it's still a great movie. It's just not the best. I love the darkness of it, but I cannot really stand Jack Nicholson or Kim Basinger.
Michael Keaton MAY be Batman, but he's not Bruce Wayne. Batman is still, a great and entertaining movie, though.
I just watched this again last night since I hadn't seen it about 10 years. It's good and I like it more than I did then, but it's not a great movie
Burton's design is perfect and Keaton makes a great Batman, but it has a few big problems that I can't get past.
1. Batman's a supporting character. We really don't get much from him. Example: when he solves the mystery of the cosmetics we get it through Basinger's character. Keaton's great in a few scenes in a different kind of way, but he doesn't get enough to do.
2. The reverse is that we get far too much Basinger and Nicholson. She's a useless character who you never get a feel for. I had no idea what she was thinking or feeling during the film.
Nicholson's Joker is even worse. It's not Nicholson's fault, he's good, but we see far too much of the Joker. Often we get scenes of him doing crazy things, especially the Museum for no reason at all. It makes him seem more nuts but less menacing. He's an especially unthreatening villian, at least the way it's played. And using cosmetics to kill people, that's not exactly cinematic.
It's a very good movie, that very nearly gets Batman right on every count. It's a good movie, with great one-liners, but the focus isn't on Batman as much as it could have been. Great action, though, especially for its time. And Kudos to Burton for making a really good film.
I give it a 4.. it probably deserves a 4 1/2 but Robert Wuhl is in it. I still think it's the best of the first four but Bale is the best Bruce Wayne so far.
I still thank Val Kilmer captures the look of Batman & Bruce better, but yeah... I think I'd agree with that. Bale is the best so far.
Matt have you heard any interviews with Bale? He's refusing to speak with his native Welsh accent for interviews because he thinks it would be disrespectful to do while talking about playing Batman, an American icon.

I don't think that's necessary of him, but it's pretty respectful of the guy to be actually concerned about it. I doubt Americans are as uptight about such a thing.. now if they ever cast an American as James Bond.. I think Tay will go crazy...
