Scotty forgets where he put that dang hyper-spanner

Quote:
STAR Trek star James Doohan, who played engineer Scotty, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

The gutsy 84-year-old actor, often told "Beam me up Scotty" on the USS Enterprise, had hoped to stay on the Star Trek convention circuit.

He had carried on despite Parkinson's disease, diabetes, lung fibrosis and a bout of pneumonia. But Alzheimer's disease was the final straw.

His wife Wende, 47, said at home in Los Angeles: "With Jimmy it's the loss of words. He is not so sick yet that he doesn't know people. And there are times when he is sharp as a tack. But it's the older memories that stick.

"What he had for breakfast might be an iffy thing, but by golly he could tell you all about how he got the part on Star Trek."

A tribute for the actor is being held in Hollywood next month and he is also to receive a star on the town's walk of fame.
Sad sad news for Trek fans like me. How many more years before the entire TOS cast is gone. How much longer is left for Shatner?

Shatner still looks good and healthy, but you never know.

Nimoy looks a bit decrepit though.

Nimoy looked decrepit in Star Trek IV

That's a shame about Doohan though, horrible way to go.

Not so horrible for the person who has it, since they don't remember what is going on... but a nightmare for their family.

Were I in that position, and I knew I had and was going to get worse, I'd take care of things so that my family wouldn't have to take care of me. TAKE CARE OF THEM GOOD.

Very true, but there is some nightmare for the person. There was a stint for about three months where my grandmother, going through a rapidly worsening case of Alzheimers, was in a terrible situation as she would wake up upset every morning because she didn't know where she was and couldn't remember that my grandfather had passed away a few years before. Every morning was like waking up in a strange place and learning all over again that your husband of 58 years is gone. It's bad all around and my sympathies go out to Doohan and his family.

Did I read that right, his wife is 47?

Somehow the phrase "If I give it any more she'll blow, cap'n!" takes on a whole new level

So sad. I wish nothing but the best for his family as they go through this rough time.
