Plot:Kevin Smith is afraid to step outside of his comfort zone. So, he runs away from projects that can help him grown and resorts to doing the same movie AGAIN. Not that I don't like it, but it's sad to see that Kevin won't branch away from his happy spot. Anyways, it's 10 years later and Dante and Randal are still working at Quik Stop presumably.
Cast: Brian O'Halloran (Dante), Jeff Anderson (Randal), Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, Trevor Fehrman, Jason Mewes (Jay), Kevin Smith (Silent Bob)

This is a joke that was supposedly cut from Chris Rock's opening Oscar monologue...
SUPPOSEDLY. Who knows. But it's funny either way.
Quote:
CHRIS ROCK: "You go to Sundance expecting Quentin Tarantino.... but all you get is Kevin Smith. Only Tarantino should be allowed to direct indie films.... if an indie film is being made with a pinhole camera, then Quentin would turn it into something huge and you'd be out with your pinhole camera the next day filming your shadow or something. I'm sorry Kevin... but Jersey Girl should've been called Gigli Lite. You get Ben Affleck and the Jennifer Lopez for half the screen time but the same amount of suckiness as Gigli. This is one of the few times when I'm glad Kevin blew me off and didn't put me as a cameo in his movie! I should get an academy award for best career move for non-cameo in a career ruining film!"
Making a sequel to a low budget indie film when you are no longer a low budger indie director (but wish you still were) is a receipe for disaster.
The former is a burdgeoning director making best use of limited resources. This is just a director who could've been big handing in his man-card.
It's like being within reach of making the CEO for your dream company and deciding you liked your old juniur high paper route better just because the board of directors shouted at you for one screw up.

It also screams of desperation. I love Kevin Smith but he seems terribly gunshy after Jersey Girl. He drops out of Fletch, decides not to direct the Green Hornet...
He's afraid to take chances so he's going back to his comfort zone.
For a man who has bucked the system in the past, he's afraid to buck his own niche market.
Kevin Smith had a showing of Clerks 2 on December 16th in California. He invited 50 of his View Askew message board guys/gals to see it. THey naturally loved it and thought it was outstanding. Many talked about how they thought it was borderline R/NC17 so who know.
While these fanboys will most likely love anything he makes, I read enought positive specific comments to give me hope.
The old March release date is dead though. I read this quote from Kevin Smith himself about the above mentioned screening. This is from his message board. You can see the target release date now:

The screening went amazingly well - ****ing gangbusters, really. I was delighted to finally show the flick to people outside of the inner circle. We held a focus group afterwards that yielded some great input, but what was most helpful was just sitting in the back, listening to audience reaction during the screening.
As a result, I found some more places to make trims in the flick, and the current running time is a tight, lean 1:33. Can't see the flick dipping much lower than this.
The plan is to take the flick to Cannes in May (if they'll have us) and come out in either August or September.
Some of you guys must realize, Smith isn't tucking his tail and going back to his "comfort zone" because he's been scared off. He's obligating a promise. He most definitely was and still will be venturing off into a realm outside of Snootchie Bootches. What drew him back in was Jason Mewes. Mewes kept pestering him for another flick and Smith stood fast and went forward with Jersey Girl and his other plans. It was when Mewes' addictions got the best of him getting him in serious troubles with the law Smith made a deal with him....kick the habits and you'll get your flick. Mewes did, and Smith held true to his word. If he follows it up with a Jason Lee led flick set at a Wal-Mart called Wal-Rats then I'd say yes he's becoming sefl deprecating, but until then it's a just wait and see kinda thing.

Yeah that's nice Bordick but Kevin is withdrawing a bit. He was stung by the failure of Jersey Girl (although I claim it's pretty good just no one saw it). Then he became disentangled from Fletch and then he backed out of directing the Green Hornet.
I love Kevin Smith flicks. I just worry that he's now afraid to challenge himself. I don't mean that as disrepect but as concern for one of my favorite writer/directors.
