Yes yes, saw it today. Characters roles were fine, morpheous I mean Lawerance did a good job. Some of the ending winning of the Bee was unexpected. Movie is about achieving. Akeelah, a school student who doesnt attend her classes or study, happens to be good at spelling. Struggling with her family situation she gets guidance and support (you'll see how) to make her way up. 3.0/5
You also get the sense of this Korean kid, other speller in the team, and his very strict father who asks his to study with no break (this simulates another culture).. and the simpathy Akeelah feels for him.
Really great, heartwarming movie. Think Searching for Bobby Fischer with a spelling bee This is the kind of movie that you just can't help but smile for a long time after the movie is over. Very predictable stuff towards the end. I did enjoy the little curveball the director threw though, and after thinking about the ending, it was a bit too Hollywood for me. Let's be a bit realistic here. Wouldn't they play it out until there was one winner left? And how cheesy was it showing the father at the end? It had the feeling of like the director gave up a bit after writing a fairly original screenplay and decided to go cliche-ville at the end, but like I said, overall one of the best pictures so far this year. By the way, for those who are interested, here's the full quote that was used in the movie
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. -Marianne Williamson

Thanks. I had to leave the theatre for about two minutes just as he started quoting that. There were some noisy teens in the aisle to the theatre making out and giggling that had annoyed me for half an hour so I went and complained. First time I've left in the middle of a movie in a long time.
