Plot: The original superhero is back. The familiar red, yellow and blue icon known as Superman returns from a mysterious six-year absence, where he will have to face not only Lex Luthor, but the public perception that Metropolis might have been better off without him.
Cast: Brandon Routh (Superman/Clark Kent), Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), Eva Marie Saint (Ma Kent), Hugh Laurie (Perry White), Sam Huntington (Jimmy Olsen), Noel Niell, James Marsden (Richard White), Stephan Bender (Young Clark), Kal Penn, Parker Posey
It's my fave movie of the year, and easily one of my favorite superhero movies. It's so well put together and beautifully shot that it's hard not to be completely hypnotized by it.
How amazing was that scene with the plane falling into the baseball field?! Really mindblowing stuff.
I think the story is great, but Ratner's vision is a big part of what made the final product come out so well. I can't separate the visuals from everything else; they go hand-in-hand. I loved the atmosphere of the whole thing.
What did you think of Bosworth as Lois Lane? I read your concerns in the other thread so I'm curious how you feel she measured up.
It's like everyone was better than usual because they knew they were a part of something really great. It brought out the best in all of them, which is what fantastic movies tend to do.
I just saw this last night and already I want to experience it again.
Here's the thing about Kate Bosworth... she would have been a TERRIBLE Lois in Superman: The Movie or Superman II.
This Lois is an older, wiser, different Lois with more responsibilities and different goals. She's PERFECT as that. Really nails it I think.

How Was Spacey? Better then Hackman?
I'm saying slightly better... but a lot of his performance is clearly based on Hackman.

From what I hear its still kinda jokey I wished they let him take The John Doe/Keyser Soze route.
Not really. There's a nice balance to it. There's a LITTLE humor to it, but just enough to keep the movie light. He's also scary and deranged at times... but also a real GENIUS.
Hackman's Luthor wasn't really jokey, it was Otis that made him seem Jokey. In this movie Parker Posey fills that role, but she's not as outright goofy as Otis.
Lexi, you going to catch it in 3D IMAX for your second time?
P.O.O Hackman's Luthor was very jokey, the wigs, long arms, Park Ave. Jokes, Otisberg.
Jokey.
What jokes did he tell? Did he do any pratfalls?
Most of the jokes sprung from Otis screwing up... Hackman just reacted to him.
Actually though, I think that worked pretty well in that movie. I LIKED the way Hackman reacted to them. Pretty great.
There's a LITTLE of that in this one... like there are references to Luthor's wig weirdness... but even that works really well. Serves a purpose actually.
I have to say I'm really disappointed, mainly because I went in expecting a 5 star movie (Josh's review had me a bit optomistic). I came out feeling like I saw something good (four stars), but not great.
The best parts of the movie are where Singer stops trying to build suspense and starts doing stuff. Lois on the plane going back to save Superman is infinitely more exciting (and emotionally satisfying) than Lois trying to fax the help message. Sure, it was twistedly clever having the henchmen playing Heart and Soul with the little kid but did that sequence have to go on for five freakin' minutes?
The concept behind the film was great, but things got all emotionally muddled up. There was a lot of tightening that could have been done. The internal struggles for the characters were wonderfully conceived but the implementation got really messy and felt disatisfying to me.
The most enjoyable parts were all the homages to the comics and the Donner films, which is nice, but not a good sign for any future movies yet to come.
This one ranks about equal with Batman Begins for me. Can't compete with Spiderman, except on a visual effects level. That airplane sequence was pretty awesome if not completely physically ridiculous.

I got called lastnight as I was going to bed to see if I would be interested in seeing this at the local Imax. On its own merit Id give the movie a 4.5 out of 5. But it gets the nudge to a 5.0 for the 3d element. This is the first time, ever that a 3d experience didt suck for me.
