Last year, Dead Man's Chest broke the box office record for biggest opening weekend in history. This month, Spider-Man 3 took back it's franchise's record from the pirates.
Now, with the third installment in the Pirate's trilogy coming this weekend (Thursday), how will it fare against the competition?

Even though Rotten Tomatoes has it at 40%. But then what do they know, it rated Spidey at 61%.
(Speaking of RT, we should use them for the authority for the official year of release in the Best Movie thread instead of IMDb which attributes any movie to the previous year even if all it did was have a showing at the Butt-numb-a-thon.)
Ok, I'm not good at this, but maybe I'll have some dumb luck.
I noticed that RT's regular members had it even lower than the critics at a dismal 36%. I don't know if it's Spider fans voting or people are zonked out with the third blockbuster triquel in four weeks opening or what. On top of that I don't think it'll get the number of screens Spiderman had, especially since the other two are still running and taking some of POTC's viewers. All in all, I think I'll be disappointed in it's box, even though I'm looking forward to seeing it and expect to enjoy it the most. If, however, it's also as disappointing a movie as the other two, I may hibernate for a month and come out in time to buy Black Snake Moan on DVD on June 26th.
How much money will At World's End make opening day?
$35 Mil
How much money will At World's End make opening weekend?
$111 Mil
How much money will At World's End make opening day?
$21 million - Thursday night
$55 million - Friday
(they really screwed up doing this Thursday opening. Since that doesn't count towards its opening weekend).
How much money will At World's End make opening weekend?
$135 million (not including Thursday's opening...I think if they had waited until Friday the movie might have had a chance at beating Spiderman 3)
Will it be #1?
Yes, but it will be a hollow #1.

Yeah, its a shame that Pirates 3 is going to do really well this opening weekend.
People don't seem to care about good story, great character development anymore. The average movie goer wants to see big name actors prancing about dazzling eye candy effects. It's all frosting and no cake.
Perhaps I am jaded in seeing this flick because I read a review that Jack Sparrow is only in about half the movie... and the other characters are as about as exciting as a bunch of gnats. Plus, to make matters worse this movie is frigging 2 hours and 48 minutes long. This is not Lord of the Rings. It's a popcorn franchise at best. Another reason why I am not excited for this film is for the obvious reason (as mentioned by Josh) is that the second film truly blew chunks.
However, not to completely cast a verdict without seeing it for myself: I might see it at the dollar theater in about a week or two.
Maybe.

I think Disney screwed themselves though by opening it for one showing Thursday instead of doing midnights. They're going to wish that money counted towards the weekend.

Numbers have been revised: only $14 million for Thursday.
Now showing $43 million for Friday.
Not good for Pirates. At this rate it won't even top Shrek's opening weekend.
Yeah, Disney definitely did themselves wrong with that early opening.

If it doesn't beat Shrek, then maybe at least a few people wised up to the franchise after the second one.
People's dissapointment in the second combined with all the terrible reviews for the third might have had an effect.
I really thought most people loved the second on though. With the kind of money it made, they had to have liked it. It made money week after week after week which usually means people were going to see Pirates 2 over and over and over again.
I'm to humiliated by my Spider-Man 3 guess to even make an attempt at PoTC:3... I was so off, I just wanted to die.
I agree with you Captain. Spidey was a huge let down because of it's bad villian character juggling act and some of it's misfiring comedy. However, I was not excited to see Pirates 3 before I seen Spidey 3. Pirates 2 was just so bad (especially in reflection) that I never wanted to see another Pirates movie again. However, it won't break my bank account to see it at the dollar theater in a week or so...just to see if their is anything redeemable about this third installment.
Important Note: I do recommend that you see Spider-Man 3 again. You may like it a bit more with a second helping.
I know I did. I originally gave Spider-Man 3 a rating of: C- when I first seen it, however, my second viewing I gave a rating of: B-.

I'm not sure why they should be upset by the 8 pm openings. It doesn't hurt them to make money earlier. It doesn't help the one day or weekend totals for sure. However, combining the Thursday and Friday numbers is excellent. They only had one showing at 8pm, I believe.
I guess if their only goal was to win back the weekend records then they should be upset. Disney, though, seems more interested in $$$ than records and acclaim anyways.
