Dark Horizons reports reports (via Usenet) that there is something new and significant happening with the BABYLON 5 franchise, and this time it comes straight from the fingers of the show's creator, J. Michael Straczynski. Is it for movie or television format? JMS isn't saying at this time...
"There has been something of rather substantial proportion that's finally gone from talk to money, such that I'm now working frantically to meet some deadlines, but there's nothing I can say about this until after January 15th, probably closer to the end of that month," explains the writer. "The only thing I can say is that phase one of the new project is a go, hence the furious writing schedule at this end of things, which is why I've been silent until deciding to kick up some dust on the political discusion. I've been writing my little brains out. I wouldn't go on about something in this way if it wasn't a significant development."
There is the B5 project that actor Jerry Doyle was hoping to jumpstart with or without Straczynski's involvement, though this may be something else new under the sun. One thing that is confirmed now is a new BABYLON 5 DVD that collects all the two-hour telefilms together in one box set (including commentary by JMS on "In the Beginning" and "The Gathering") as well as a box set for the short-lived B5 spinoff series CRUSADE. Expect both of those new sets to be released sometime in 2004 after the fifth and final season of BABYLON 5 hit the street.
Yup, JMS confirmed something is happening on the B5 front but wouldn't say what. This is extremely exciting as JMS doesn't typically make this kind of comment if something isn't going to come from it. In fact of 10+ years of reading his stuff online I can only think of one instance that something he was working on and talked about didn't come to fruition.
In non-related news, he also said the issues between himself and Top Cow have been resolved and thus Rising Stars will finally see it's last 3 issues starting next year.
This Babylon 5 worshipper is estatic about this near news (I say that because you can't really do an HNN on it...yet)!
As it is, I've been reading the Centauri Trilogy books. Pretty good.
Could this be the result of any number of these combinations:
1) that the DVD box sets are selling really well?
2) that everyone involved in the show, and on the DVD commentaries is still highly attatched to the series, and wants to see it continue onwards?
3) that JMS himself has gained alot of stature with his writing comics, especially the critical acclaim that Amazing Spider-Man, Rising Stars, and Midnight Nation have gotten?
4) that JMS is finished with Jeremiah now?
5) that some of the actors and actresses of the show have gained both popularity and power after the show(s) ended (especially Doyle and Woodward)?
Doyle is a member of the GOP, he ran for office in Cali. I think he even does some talk radio stuff out there. But he's most definitely well connected politically speaking.
As for Peter Woodward, his Conquest show kicks major ass on the History Channel, where he's a visible symbol, and joins R. Lee Emery as the strongest sellers of that station to date. He's got enormous pull on sponsors and tv executives.
But yeah, a Babylon 5 movie would kick some major ass. At the same time, I'd love to see them redo Crusade, and get it right this time.
As long as the Sci-Fi miniseries never sees the light of day again. It is a blight on the stellar B5 Franchise.
Crusade had a lot of potential and wasn't bad at all. But it was SO hard to see, buried on a basic cable channel and aired at impossible and sometimes unpredictable times, the show never had a prayer.

I am an admitted fan of the Scifi miniseries. So there!
But Crusade failed because JMS wanted total creative control for his studio, and TNT wouldn't give it to him. And what's worse, TNT wanted to make Crusade "Sex Trek in Space" and be really vulgar, sexual, and violent. And then they started doing stupid little bureacratic stuff to JMS and Warners, and they eventually told TNT to go **** themselves.
JMS had creative control over B5, which is why he wanted it over Crusade. I think if you watch B5 he more then proved he should have that control.
TNT just didn't want to do Sci-fi anymore, which is a big part of why they destroyed Crusade.
I liked the Rangers made for tv movie (I'm assuming that's what you meant by mini-series) but I know hobbit didn't. But that's okay, because we know he doesn't have much sci-fi taste since he still watches Enterprise.
