U2 is easily one of my favorite all time bands. The kind of group that I will sit down with my U2 cds, my discman, and play all my favorite songs of theirs. I know I ain't alone in that. So, U2, their catalogue, and your opinions. The list (in my order of preference)
1. The Unforgetable Fire - I really had to think about putting this ahead of The Joshua Tree. And, in all honesty, The Joshua Tree is a superior album. But this one has a sentimental place for me, from when I discovered it that can't be beat. Promenade and Elvis Prestley and America, two very subtle haunting tunes that I will always love. Bad, one of their best love songs ever.
2. The Joshua Tree - Just a blatant tour de force of modern music making. If there has ever been an album where a band hits its zenith, and then went beyond, this would cetainly qualify. Not a bad song on the album. The best "lesser" known tracks: Running to Stand sStill, Bullet the Blue Sky, and probably my favorite track on the whole album, Red Hill Mining Town (another haunting love song)
3. War - The album that put them on the American music map. A classic. Not overly produced, it was the perfect sound for the era. Sunday Bloody Sunday, an anthem for all ages. Personally, I never really cared for New Years Day, but many others obviously did. Couple with songs like The Refugee, and the subtle but moving 40, another great album.
4. Achtung Baby - This is where they started to lose me, I could feel them slipping into the morass of their next couple, overly produced and hyped, albums. None the less still a good piece of work spawning such great tunes as One, Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World, and Mysterious Ways.
5. All That You Can't Leave Behind - I admit, they finally hit the 4 minute mile mark again with this album. I truly like it, but it doesn't get me as excited as it has everyone else. Great song writing, the music is decent.
6. Boy - True vintage U2. Great album, no. But very, very good. Best tracks: I Will Follow and Out of Control (I always picture Molly Ringwald dancing when I hear this song
)
7. October - Don't know the album well enough to comment, but I love Gloria.
Never owned Zooropa or Pop, never want to.
So obviously my bias is towards older U2, because, well, I'm old. Anybody else got thoughts, disagreements, or complaints about what I said, left out, or thought?
