Discussion: The Doors studio albums

"I don't know how many of you believe in astrology,
I am a Sagitarius, the most philisophical of all the signs.
Anyway I don't believe in it, I think its a bunch of bullshit myself.
Hey listen, listen man,
I don't know whats going to happen man, but I just want to get my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames."
- Jim

Alright, this thread may get as much traffic as an Appalachian country road at midnight, but what the hell.

Albums (in order of my preference)

1.LA Woman - It's a shame that Jim died and that this was their last album. In all seriousness the 4 packs of cigarettes a day he was smoking paid off some serious dividends. Jim's voice had become husky, and deep, able to bring across the blues flavor that is liberally spread throughout this album. The band had also given up the over the top music that had plagued the previous albums. LA Woman had the trade mark "epic" song that is to be found on every Doors album in it's title track. The album also included a few more wistful tracks in "L'America" and "The Hyacinth House". but what really stands out are tracks like "Been Down So Long" and "Cars Hiss By My Window", good blues tracks with a Doors twist. "The Wasp", nearly a spoken word performance over a pounding bass.

2.The Doors - First album, pretty much geniuos throughout (although if I never hear Light My Fire Again I won't complain). Has probably my favorite Doors track of all time "Soul Kitchen", a brilliant combination of undersstated and over the top music. "Crystal Ship" just a haunting tune. Other great standbys such as "Break on Through", "The End" and "Back Door Man". And who doesn't want a drink after "Alabama Sog"

3) Morrison Hotel - Solid album, not great though. "Waiting for the Sun" is an unfortunate foreshadowing of the cruise ship music that is going to plague future albums. Bright sots: "You make me real", just a fun, lively song. "Land Ho!", another song you can't but help enjoy listening to. "Maggie M'Gill" is my favorite off the album, dark and damn near frightening in mood.

4) An American Prayer - This is the album I probably listen to the most these days. It is an aquired taste, but if you get it, it is an awesome thing.

5) Strange Days - Songs like "Your Lost Little Girl","Unhappy Girl", and "I Can't see Your Face", & "My Eyes Have Seen You" seem to make up their own unfortunate tandems. The rest of the album is solid especially with "When The Music's Over" which gives me chills to this day.

6) The Soft Parade - Mediocre. They are drifting into a big band sound that really doesn't do it for me. "Wild Child" and "The Soft Parade" are the stand out tracks on this one, the rest are decent at best.

7) Waiting for the Sun. Meh. The chant of "My Wild Love" is good, but not something you want to hear very often, which is pretty much a description of the rest of the album. "Wintertime Love" and "Summers Almost Gone" could be sung in the bar on the Love Boat. "Five to One" is adequate, but far beneath the similar "The End", "The Soft Parade", and "When The Music's Over"

Any thoughts? Anyone acutally read this whole thing?

I like the Doors, but I have never been a big fan, I've just heard a few songs here and there that I like such as "Light My Fire" and "Break on Through"

Nope, mostly because I have never heard any of those albums, just a song or two.

I read the whole thing and I agree with your opinions 100%.

I was in 9th grade when I read No One Here Gets Out Alive and became an instant Doors-aholic. I used to piss the boys off by getting into arguements with them comparing the merits of the doors to Led Zeppelin. They hated me. Of course now that I'm older and wiser I know better...but back then I liked to tease the boys.

So yeah...everything you said I agree with completely. Sorry I can't add much to it. My days have been filled with vomit this week (the kids, not me, thank GOD!) and I'm just too tired to think.

I'm also a big Doors fan, even have the Doors Collection dvd. Really cool stuff if you can actually FIND the dvd. I got lucky.

Anyways, I'm generally in agreement with you Wiggum on The Doors' works. My favorite songs are "Crystal Ship", "The End", "The Unknown Soldier", "Strange Days", and, of course, "L.A. Woman"
