Yeah happy love songs are always great, but sometimes you need an anthem for unrequeted love or a good ol' fashion "they ripped your balls off and your heart out" break up. So for these occasions which are your faves.
For me.
Sad Lisa Cat Stevens: This song is so beautiful that it nearly brings me to tears each time I here it.
If You Could Read My Mind Gordon Lightfoot: The best song about tragic incompatiblity ever.
And I can't believe I forgot my favorite of all time U2's One. "Love is a Temple/Love the Higher Law/ And You ask me to enter/ but then you make me crawl/ and I can't keep holding on to all you got/ when all you got is hurt.
The song was originally intended as a tribute to the people of East and West Germany when the Wall came down. But as with most U2 lyrics, they are open for interpretation. Over the years the song has come to mean different things to different people.
The two most prevalent are the aforementioned fall of the wall, and homosexuality or AIDS. Bono has stated that it's not a love song, but that he understands how people can see it that way lyrically. And in a way it is a love song, just not traditional romantic love.

faf, POO, its Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and I wouldn't consider it a sad song. It's a funny song. Now, "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is a good sad song.
