Here at Blend Games we’ve always had a
penchant for rivalries and game-related match-ups. You might remember the battle between
Metroid Prime 3 and Halo 3? Or perhaps the tug-of-war between Free Radical’s
Haze and Bungie’s Halo 3? Well we’re at it again. This time it’s none other than
Gears of War 2 and Resistance: Fall of Man 2. So, we welcome you to this three
round bout between two of fall’s biggest exclusives. Both Microsoft and Sony are pulling out the
stops for the Xbox 360 and PS3's first-party action games, and neither game is seeking to
disappoint. So let’s not waste time and get right to what everyone came here to find out: which
game, so far, looks like it’ll prove to be the better game?
Round 1: Who has the better E3 trailer?
Coming off one of the biggest events of the year, namely E3, gamers are usually more psyched about an
upcoming title rather than any other time of the year. E3 trailers are also the perfect prerequisite for
getting gamers geeked over the upcoming holiday season. As I always say, a well placed ad or a
kick-butt clip will speak volumes over any interview or fact sheet. And both Epic and Insomniac
have released their respective E3 trailers, designating how cool each game could be. Neither
game, though, has an E3 trailer that definitively displays all the features that will be
present in the final product, but both do a good job of showcasing why both games are highly
anticipated.
For this round there isn’t much of a point in dictating who wins, given that readers will be doing
the voting. However, I would like to point out that Resistance 2 shows a purview of
amazing colors and atmospheric clarity in its trailer. The following R2 trailer also does a
good job of showing players what sort of environments they will be traversing...and it has a
general cinematic feel to the presentation of the trailer. Gears of War 2 , on the other
hand, shows off more gameplay elements – like using enemies for cover fire, or showing off the
massive amount of characters that can be on the screen at once. The following Gears 2
trailer also introduces gamers to the new lighting system Epic has appended to the Unreal
Engine. After viewing the trailers be sure to vote for which game has the better E3 trailer below.
