PlayStation 3 Now Leading Netflix Provider

Netflix is pretty much everywhere. And when it comes to streaming the world’s biggest instant movie/television provider to the masses, it looks like the PlayStation 3 is the king of the hill, being named the number one device for streaming Netflix content to televisions worldwide.

“This is a major milestone, and one we’re particularly proud of considering the myriad Netflix-compatible streaming devices on the market, from other gaming consoles to smart TVs and internet-connected set-top boxes,” said SCEA Senior VP of Business Development Phil Rosenberg in a PlayStation Blog post.

Netflix was first introduced to the PlayStation 3 in November 2009. When the service first came to the system, the only way to access its content was through a special Netflix disc. Once Netflix became a downloadable app, however, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the service took off and, “at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our number one platform overall.”

Hastings went on to highlight some of the reasons for Netflix’s success on the PS3, including the ability to easily update the application with new features on a daily basis, the free nature of the PlayStation Network and the ability to sign up for Netflix directly from the PS3. The PS3 was also the first TV streaming device to offer Netflix with 1080p, 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Plus surround sound, second screen controls and alternate audio options/subtitles. A new voice interface called “Max” is also currently being tested as another Netflix first for the console.
