Nintendo 3DS fans are being invited to “go hack themselves,” as today marks the official launch of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. Featuring a title so long it needed two colons, Soul Hackers is the upgraded version of a 1997 JRPG that, until now, has never been available in the U.S.
Coming from the fine folks at Atlus, Soul Hacker is a first-person RPG for the 3DS that takes place in Amami City, where “technology and otherworldly forces meet in a macabre fusion of cyberpunk and gothic horror,” according to the publisher. All of the Shin Megami Tensei games are a bit “out there” in the story department, and Soul Hacker is no different. Here’s a snippet from Atlus describing the game’s storyline.
“The city is permeated by Paradigm X, a virtual reality world that connect the entire populace. When the main character attempts to hack his way into Paradigm X, he accidentally comes into possession of a Gun-type COMP that allows him to communicate with and control demons. It also causes the main character’s girlfriend to get possessed by the demon Nemissa, which is when the secret Phantom society organization begins to take notice…”
See? Bananas, I tell you. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. As was announced in January, all early buyers of the physical game disc will receive a special six-song soundtrack free of charge. Last week we also announced that Soul Hackers will be available as a digital download for the 3DS, which means you can also just download the game starting today from the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Either way, it’ll set you back $39.99.
