Sonic Spin-Dashes Onto Android

You may be surprised to learn that the original Sonic the Hedgehog is not, in fact, available on every platform in existence just yet. But the game is certainly moving one step closer to reaching that goal as Sega today announced the release of its classic platformer for the Android market.

Originally released on the Sega Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog starred a blue hedgehog named (stick with me here) Sonic. The lil guy quickly became the publisher's mega mascot, spin-dashing his way into the hearts of millions with core games and spinoffs invading pretty much every gaming device known to man...Except maybe the R-Zone.

For your $2.99, the Android version of the game is optimized with widescreen support and a new update that allows players to unlock Tails and Knuckles as playable characters. Sonic purists may be having a mental meltdown right about now, but folks who just like to have as many playable characters in their games as humanly possible will likely enjoy the additional company. In case you're already playing Sonic on iOS and feeling left out, however, you'll be happy to know that the Tails and Knuckles characters will be added to your version of the game as a free update.

Being a modern mobile game, you can also expect the usual roster of upgrades, including a remastered soundtrack, leaderboards, achievements and an all-new Time Attack mode.

If you're looking to take Sonic for a spin on yet another platform and happen to have an Android phone in your pocket, then you can grab the game now for three bucks on the Google Play Store.
