Latest Dead Rising: Watchtower Clip Teases Outbreak's Origins

Even though Dead Rising: Watchtower won't be released until later this month, Legendary Pictures is giving zombie lovers a taste of the upcoming outbreak.

Zombie fans will be happy to know that the film adaption to Capcom's Dead Rising series is on schedule for its March 27th release. And in an effort to entice you, the producers have uploaded a brand new, carnage-filled clip.

Check it out (via GameSpot):

Watchtower isn't a direct adaptation to any of Capcom's Dead Rising titles. According to director Zach Lipovsky, it's a sort-of spinoff that falls into the overarching canon but follows a new set of heroes. The storyline takes place between Dead Rising 2's Fortune City outbreak and Dead Rising 3's Los Perdidos outbreak.

If you've never played Dead Rising, you'll probably want to pass on Watchtower. It's not one of those big-budget blockbusters aimed at capturing a huge audience. Legendary Pictures and Lipovsky put the movie together specifically for the video game franchise's hardcore fanbase. So, we can probably expect a lot of inside jokes and Capcom-themed outfits.

In an interview with Slashfilm, Lipovsky talked about why he prefers this hyper-focused, budget-friendly approach:

I have a feeling that if this was the 100+ million dollar version, it would star Tom Cruise and be watered down. The more money you spend, the greater the audience you have to please. This film is being made for the fans and that’s possible because it’s a digital feature. It’s being shot in Vancouver with the help of the Vancouver Capcom team that made games. We even have 2 Xboxes in the office. Someone is always running around putting pylons on heads while we are trying to have meetings. I’m a fan of the game, and I’m excited by how much of the world we’ve been able to cram in.

Surprisingly, this isn't the first movie version of Dead Rising. Back in 2010 Keiji Inafune, the producer behind Dead Rising and co-creator of Mega Man, directed an episodic film series called Zombrex: Dead Rising Sun. The series was available for streaming on Xbox Live.

Low-budget production and zombie movies go together like the Internet at cat gifs. So, Dead Rising: Watchtower should fit in nicely with the other blood-splattered titles in the zombie genre.

Grab your calendar and draw a big circle around March 27th. That's when Dead Rising: Watchtower will be available for streaming on Crackle.
