Pokemon Trainers Have Until September 14 To Grab This Legendary Monster

Pokemon trainers looking to add a Mega Rayquaza to their collection can rejoice.

Thanks to a promotion running alongside the official release of the latest Pokemon: Trading Card Game expansion, a Shiny Mega Rayquaza will be available for free.

Anyone who purchased Pokemon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire can simply choose the Mystery Gift option to receive this special promotional Legendary monster. It will be available for pickup from any Pokemon Center in-game after the gift has been received.

Shiny Mega Rayquaza will be at level 70 and will come holding a Dragon Fang. It will know the moves Dragon Dance, Dragon Ascent, Dragon Claw, and Extreme Speed. It'll also feature the special Air Lock ability. Air Lock allows all the effects of weather-based attacks to be negated, even though the rain or other effects don't go away. It's tied to Rayquaza because of its back story and influence on the weather, so of course it makes sense that the Shiny Mega Rayquaza would possess this move.

Rayquaza's Mega Evolution is said in the trailer above to "dominate" opponents, which is great marketing speak, but I have to wonder how it'd fare against my Mega Metagross, which I also happened to obtain from another Pokemon event: the Shiny Beldum, to be exact, which was distributed via similar wi-fi event back in November of last year when both Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire dropped originally.

It's only available through September 14, so if it's been a while since you beat the latest Pokemon adventures and need some time to dig them out again, you'd better get moving before the promotion passes you by.

The distribution of event Pokemon is, admittedly, one of the reasons I keep coming back to the entries I've already finished long ago. Considering the fact that when I started playing the only way to get a Mew was by a special event or cheating, it's been completely revolutionized.

GameStop has been involved in several giveaways in the past few years as well, giving away a special Mega Diancie, Gengar, and more to fans who went in-store to pick up special cards with codes on them for use in-game. It's a lot easier nowadays to collect all the monsters you can, and the developers want to share these treats with us from time to time. It's a whole different ballgame, so it makes me curious how we might be sharing Pokemon cards if there were another Pokemon Trading Card Game for 3DS, and how we could perhaps see boosters being transmitted. It's wishful thinking of course, but it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

I'm off to go get my Shiny Mega Rayquaza now!
