French gaming studio Cyanide announced today that they're collaborating with A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin to create video games based on the medieval fantasy series. Development is said to already be underway.

Cyanide has the exclusive rights to create Song of Ice and Fire games for the PC and next-gen consoles. The book series was previously turned into a card game, board game, and pen-and-paper RPG. An HBO mini-series is currently in production.

"We are all huge fans of A Song of Ice and Fire, so it is a true honour for our teams to be entrusted with creating the first video games inspired by this masterpiece," said Patrick Pligersdorffer, Cyanide's Managing Director. "The twists and turns of the plot will allow us to deliver an experience which can be enjoyed by both long-time fans as well as gamers new to the series."

A Song of Ice and Fire is a seven-book series, four of which have been completed. Martin's been taking his sweet ass time with the fifth novel, A Dance with Dragons, so hopefully he's not too involved in the development of these games.
