The race to kick the crap out of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is on. Games like Allods Online and Fallen Earth are seeking to take the crown from WoW but not before NCSoft’s Aion takes a crack at it. In fact, it’s been announced that the game has gone gold and will revving up to take down WoW sooner than you think.

According to the press release…

”In advance of the game’s launch, Aion will be showcased at both GamesCom 2009 in Cologne, Germany, as well as the Penny Arcade Expo 2009 in Seattle, US. Both events will feature exclusive hands-on access to the 1.5 version of the game, which has yet to be unveiled to Western audiences.”

The game looks gorgeous and it will cater to the RPG crowd who prefers story-oriented multiplayer gaming. The concept behind the combat, character customization and unraveling plot via quests and adventuring sounds pretty cool.
