I’m actually writing this article after the hail, snow, sleet, rain, dragon storm I received after the piece I wrote a couple of days ago on horrible PS3 commercials that are currently ruining the airwaves (And I still stand behind that decision, too).
The thing is, the moment a game journalist begins to make a crude remark on a system or a game that is universally liked by the public; the readers immediately jump on their case and call them biased for having such a radically different opinion than them. And, believe it or not, I’ll be the first to admit that many of those screaming, fist raising people may be right. In theory.
You see, as gamers, we become accustomed, and almost supportive, of a company if they make quality products that you’ve tended to like over the years. The same goes for music (The new album sucks, buuuuuut, they did make Pinkerton…) and cinema (Eyes Wide Shut is a disaster, but Kubrick made it, sooooo), and that can be a problem.
The thing is, though, there’s a difference between defending something and bashing it, and in no other form of media are people more boisterous in their feelings than when it comes to gaming. This is probably because we’re more passionate about our entertainment than others (Or maybe it’s just because we’re an internet generation, and internet generation folk tend to talk without thinking of their consequences. I blame it on the distance, you see).
So when I bashed PS3 commercials, I did it because I hate them. Plain and simple, I think they’re garbage.
And while I could end my animosity for them right there, I won’t. You know why? Because I’m a gamer.
And a journalist.
An online journalist, at that.
And I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a pretty dangerous trifecta. One where I’m usually encouraged to trash talk until either you or me is blue in the face. Either or, the outcome won’t be pretty. I mean honestly, I’m not reporting for CNN here, people. I’m reporting for Cinemablend.
If I were anchoring for CNN, I’d probably report like I’m reporting for CNN, but I’m not, so I won’t. End of story.
But yeah, so back to the beginning argument—are game journalists biased? All I have to say to that is, sure, of course we are; you’re asking for one of the worst fields to ask for objectivity. But at the same time, think about it, would you want me to be impassive about how awesome the new songs are in Guitar Hero 3? Or what about how bored I quickly got playing multiplayer in the new Halo? Of course not, I’m an opinionated prick who loves gaming. Possibly even more than you.
So, yep, there you have it, game journalists are biased. And on that note, the PS3 really sucks. It has crappy games and even at a price drop it’s STILL too expensive. For now. Who knows what the future holds, though? Not me. But I’ll continue to whine about it all the same. If you can count on anything, you can count on that.
