AudioSurf Not Coming To Live Arcade

I don't know about you, but one genre I think the 360 comes up short in is musical arcade-style racing games. As luck would have it, though, the award-winning indie PC game Audiosurf is coming to Xbox Live Arcade. Oh wait, no, never mind.

In Audiosurf, players pilot a hovercraft...thing along a race track and try to collect colored blocks as they pop up in different lanes. So what's so special about that? Well, the race course is created based on music (MP3 files or CDs) you upload. The colored blocks pop up in sync with the notes, so a song with an insane guitar solo will be carpal tunnel hard. The layout and coloration of the course is affected by your song choice as well - for example, a mellow song would have cooler colors. It's sort of a combination between Wipeout and Guitar Hero.

Anyway, on Wednesday XBLAH noticed that the latest issue of GamesTM Magazine said the game would be coming to Xbox Live Arcade soon. However, Audiosurf creator Dylan Fitterer told Joystiq that the announcement "must have been a miscommunication. I never said Audiosurf was coming to XBLA." Erf.

The game has been available on PC via Steam since February and it might be more convenient to play on PC anyway if that's where you keep most of your MP3's. Sounds like Microsoft's loss, though. If they're really trying to push the 360 as a platform for digital content, I'd think games that actually make use of that content would be a great way to promote that strategy. Maybe music isn't much of a priority for them.
