Everyone's favorite alternate history real-time strategy series is back. Electronic Arts has announced that it is developing a third installment in the Command & Conquer: Red Alert after a seven-year hiatus from the series.
Yesterday PC Gamer revealed Red Alert 3 would be the cover story for its April 2008 issue, which will hit newsstands on March 4th. The announcement by PC Gamer promises exclusive information, and other details surrounding the game are unknown at this time. Except that it's going to at least be available on the PC (or else it would be a really crappy story for PC Gamer). Also, the story will somehow involve Soviets; the PC Gamer cover features an AK47-wielding chica in a red military uniform (including standard issue hot pants). For the uninitiated, the Red Alert series' central premise is that Albert Einstein traveled back in time and assassinated Hitler before his rise to power, which leads to the Soviets trying to take over the world. Any attempt to connect the storyline to the other Command & Conquer games will make your head explode (though it hasn't stopped EA from trying). The last installment of the series, the Yuri's Revenge expansion pack to Red Alert 2, ended with the rogue Soviet psychic Yuri either being sent to prison or getting stranded in prehistoric times (as rogue Soviet psychics are wont to do) depending on whether you beat the Soviet or Allied Campaign. The Soviets and Allies are still at each other's throats even after cooperating to stop Yuri so EA could just pick up the series where it left off. Hopefully they'll give us more info on the game soon. Worst-case scenario, we'll just have to wait a couple weeks and pick up the PC Gamer issue. |
