Preset animations in interactive sports games with motion-capture technology is age-old stuff that’s slowly been improved to a working standard for today’s generation of gaming.
For the Xbox 360 and PS3 we don’t see as many animation clippings, key-transitions or cut-off points the way we used to. Nevertheless, many collision-heavy sports titles still suffer from stiff responses or preset animation scripts that make the games feel robotic. That’s about to change with the new euphoria driven football title by 505 Games, BackBreaker.
According to Torsten Reil, CEO of NaturalMotion…
“Backbreaker is about being on the field and in the action”, …. “Through the use of euphoria, we are able to create an experience that is truly interactive and different every time.”
At its core, BackBreaker is running on NaturalMotion’s fluid-animation technology and AI driven response engine, euphoria. This means that every tackle, every hit, every form of contact will be different each time. This is the same sort of technology that powered Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Grand Theft Auto IV.
Adam Kline, president of 505 Games U.S commented in the press release, saying…
“Backbreaker sets the new standard for football,” ... “Repetitive, canned animations are a thing of the past. We recognize that fans are eager for something new, and Backbreaker will blow them away.”
I’m sure EA will quake in their boots if this game gets the exposure it deserves and no doubt, Madden will get owned unless they saturate this tech in their upcoming 2011 outing.
BackBreaker is due out spring 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PS3. For more information be sure to visit the Official Website.
