Best Of 2007: Top Five Video Game Characters - Part I

We could focus only on the top games of 2007, but with a year of great story and even better characters there’s no way we could pass up the chance to tell everyone about the video game characters we loved. So, the Blend Games team got together to argue about the viability of Alyx’ assets as a tool in storytelling. It turns out we’re a tad misogynistic – at least I am. But that’s OK, because we finally came to establish our list of the Best Video Game Characters of 2007.
What you’ll find below is the beginning of our list. As the year comes to a close we thought you’d like to know who didn’t make it to the top of our coveted chart. Tomorrow we'll reveal who made it to the top, today is for those who came so damn close. This list was compiled using the latest technology in beer pouring and slurred speech. Two broken bottles, one crushed coffee table and a small kitchen fire later we have something to be proud of. So now, Blend Games presents to you, dear reader, the Top 5 Video Game Characters of 2007. 5. Nathan Drake 4. Nathan Drake, descendent of Sir Francis Drake, is perfectly molded from the classic pulp action heroes in stories past. Developer Naughty Dog didn’t simply cut and paste a formulaic hero into their game; they took a standard model and incorporated him seamlessly into the unique interactive environment of a video game. While comparison with Indiana Jones is warranted, Nathan is his own man. A funny, engaging, and pirate killing one. Now that it’s almost guaranteed to happen, we can’t wait to head out on another adventure with Nate.
Love or hate the sci fi twist in the game, it certainly is an interesting take on what could have been a straightforward Thief knockoff. And just to be sure you understand, we’re choosing Altair as our favorite character here…not Desmond Miles. The assassin from 1191 is a smooth operator, and his bad ass shanking skills are unmatched in games. The real enjoyment with Altair was getting him around the four cities in Assassin’s Creed. Except for the ridiculous sneaking around on a huge horse, which was somehow invisible if Altair plodded along like a grandmother with a broken hip and a walker made of tin.
