The next major patch to World of Warcraft will add Ulduar, a massive new raid instance to the MMORPG. Today Blizzard released the first in-depth details about the dungeon.
First, some dramatic flavor text courtesy of Blizzard: "Beyond Ulduar's gates lies no city, no treasure vault, no final answer to the Titan's mysteries. All that awaits those who dare set foot in Ulduar is a horror even the Titans could not, would not destroy, an evil they merely... contained. Beneath ancient Ulduar, the Old God of death lies, whispering.... Tread carefully, or its prison will become your tomb."
Ulduar is actually split up into two different sections. The first segment pits a group of players against a massive army that guards the gate to Ulduar's inner sanctum. Players will pilot a combination of Choppers, Demolishers, and Siege Engines - each with unique abilities - to defeat this massive force. Afterwards, they must face the Flame Leviathan, an enormous tank. The raid must weaken the Leviathan and then launch players onto the tank's back to sabotage it. After they've defeated the Leviathan, the raid can then proceed on foot into the second section of Ulduar, which is more like the raid instances you're used to.
Ulduar will feature 14 bosses, 11 of which will have optional Hard Modes. During the battle in the first segment of the dungeon, for example, there are four defensive towers that players can choose to destroy before engaging Flame Leviathan. The more towers they leave up, the harder the fight against Leviathan will be (and the better the loot rewards). It's similar to how the Sartharion fight in Obsidian Sanctum is structured.
Blizzard has yet to reveal when Patch 3.1, which includes Ulduar and a host of class changes, is set to be released. Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion to WoW which is required in order to access Ulduar and other level 71-80 content, was released in November 2008.
